MASSIVE RV Park FIRE - Old Orchard Beach, Maine - 10 (RVs) gone, 6 still burning :(
I don't know is anybody on here has their RVs stored at The Wagon Wheel in Old Orchard Beach, Maine or not, but if you do, you need to contact the park owners to find out if your's was damaged or not. I think some of the ones that went down were closed up for the winter.
There MASSIVE fire going on in Old Orchard Beach, right now, is just around the corner from me...firefighters from 20 towns are here trying to get it under control - 10 homes (RVs) completely gone, 6 more are still burning as I type this.
At the moment it's not spreading, so they are not telling anyone outside of The Wagon Wheel (Campground & RV Park) to leave, some folks have left though. It was started by a train, the wheels were sparking, set the bushes on fire, that spread to a propane tank which blew up, and from there it just started spreading from trailer to trailer, camper to camper, RV to RV (causing more explosions - more propane tanks) the train tracks themselves are also on fire, and several acres of surrounding forest are on fire - they are keeping it contained inside the park right now and trying to get it out before it spreads.
OOB is all trees, with trailers and RVs peppered in between them, fires are bad around here because they move fast from tree to tree camper to camper. There hasn't been a big fire like this in a few years.
It's not close enough for us to leave yet, (I'm not in this campground, I'm over across the way, they are hopeful it's not going to cross the street) but I'm just a few hundred yards from this, if the wind changes direction we may have to evacuate too. :(

Everyone that hasn't left yet is kind of standing around ready to drive out at a moment's notice. Scary day we are having.

Similar fire occurred last month in Palm Harbor, Fla. The storage yard had no insurance.

The storage yard doesn't insure your possessions. That's up to you.

EK, may be a good idea to keep your home wet with your garden hose/sprinklers. I did that once as a forest fire got close - I live on the edge of a National Forest. Had valuables packed on my 4X4 truck for an evac if needed, but luckily they got it stopped before hitting us.

The owner of the facility does have insurance which covers his buildings and property but, as stated, the Owners of the RV's must carry their own coverage.

EelKat,
You have several cats, right? I would unhook from your water, electric, sewer connections and have keys in the ignition to be ready to roll... just in case... oh and stow anything that might become an UFO even if you are just going to go a mile down th road for now.....

I believe Pinehunter might have been referring to the property owner's *liability* insurance. But you're right, RV owners should carry their own.
