Mattress extending over platform

I tried to research this with google and have not found anything. The mattress I bought (short queen) extends over the bed platform about a foot. I assume this is common but I would feel better if it was supported.

I am thinking of extending the platform with a piece of plywood and a support.

Do I need to do that and will it cause problems.

If you sit on the unsupported end of the mattress, that will ruin it. It should never have been built without support.

If this is what you're dealing with you can add onto your box, much like a dining table. If you check the modification thread you will find pics of how to do it.

Our mattress hangs over the bottom also. I just assumed they were all that way! I don't see how it would matter as long as you don't sit on that end.

I am thinking that it may have been built that way so you don't hit your foot on corner as you walk around.

I really believe I will build an extension with a single support in the middle, not needing support all the way around the extended platform. I guess I still could not sit on the edge of the foot of the bed. I just don't want my new mattress to sag.

If it's a good quality mattress I don't think it would ever sag, unless you sit on it! You could ask the opinion of the place you buy it, or better yet, call the manufacturer with the same question.

Not a big deal - pull the existing plywood bed platform cover off, make up one the length you need to support the mattress, add a couple brackets and off you go. You can instead also make up a folding extension with a pair of folding shelf brackets. There are several on this page - pick the size and send AMAZON the bucks and you are on the way to a good DIY mod: https://www.amazon.com/Folding-Shelf.../dp/B0006LBUFC. Heck, I pulled our bed platform out of our 5er, cut it down 5" so it would be more conducive to reading in bed w/o my head hitting the slide ceiling so mods to the bed platform are common. On a TT, I just extended the plywood as mentioned above then added a full length queen mattress instead of that silly length short queen RV mfrs love to burden us with (I'm also 6'4")

Are you sure you got a short queen. might measure and make sure then extend the platform to match. extend a peice of 1/2 inch plywood over lapping the original 12 inches and screw well. you will never notice the difference.
