? Mattress Height Question

Going to buy new mattress for RV. How much comfort difference is there between an 8" and 10"?

Our height problem is that the bed is in a slide and 12-15" of the foot of the mattress slides under the bedroom wardrobe/cabinet. The crappy OEM 6" mattress slides under with about an inch to spare, so I don't think an 8" mattress would be a problem. I'd prefer a 10" replacement but have worries that it would cause problems with the slide and that work-arounds wouldn't be worth it. An RV-short would probably work but it's too short for my comfort.

Sigh, wish we'd kept the mattress from the 5er...

We bought a 8 inch memory foam standard size mattress and are happy.

Being a few inches longer, it compresses when the slide is in, but at least my toes aren't hanging over the end any more.

I had a similar worry. Last Summer I undertook a major rehab project. In advance, I bought a 10-inch Sleep Number mattress, then realized it might not fit. I called Select Comfort and explained it might be a couple months before I could determine if it fit under the "lip." The nice lady said "No problem: You have 100 nights to try the Sleep Number mattress." (Terms and conditions are here.)

Turns out the 10-inch fit under the "lip." I was able to test with about 20 days to spare. The alternative would have been the 8-inch Sleep Number mattress.

We bought directly from Select Comfort. For expensive items that may be subject to returns, I find buying direct can reduce hassles.

The difference between a 6 inch and 12 inch mattress is illustrated by the children's story of "The Princess and the Pea".

I slept comfortably on a 5 inch foam mattress in our old TT. My DW insisted we buy a $1300 16 inch complex foam system for our home. The princess insists she could not sleep comfortably on anything less. She also says she sleeps better on the 6 inch foam mattress in our RV. Go figure!

Don't tell her I said this. I may be sleeping on the floor in the garage.

I don't think thickness per se is a strong indicator of comfort - there are some darn good 8" and some rather crappy 12" models. Whatever your height limit may be, choose top quality construction if you are picky about sleep comfort. We like a hybrid design, innerspring plus foam layer. Others prefer air-adjustable or 100% memory foam.
