Messy carpets

The DH and I were discussing our "next camper" and have a serious question. We are evidently sloppy eaters--as are our 2 & 4 year old grands. Seems like I am always having to sweep/mop under the dining table after a get-together. How in the world do you keep the carpet clean under the dinette? We are wanting the table/chairs option, which are usually in a slide, and usually have carpet. DH was thinking area rug. I wonder about one of those clear mats like I have under my desk at work covering the carpet. Any suggestions? What do YOU do?

We have the table & chairs, but the same problem! We put down a rug over the carpet. Wish we could replace the carpet with vinyl tile like the rest of the MH, but there's no practical way to do that.

Thanks for the reply. I even thought about cutting a big square/rectangle shaped area out of the carpet, and install tile, or even a decorative accent vinyl. I would definitely be unique! I have seen that done in houses before.

Well, in my case the dinette is the cat's domain, I do not eat there or even sit there.

But I do have a nice Bissel Pro-Heat carpet cleaner (This is a hot-water extractor) and for hard to reach places where the pro-heat's power head can not reach.. There is a Turbo brush hand tool that can be used or a standard brush hand tool. Very nice.. Got it a few weeks ago, cleanest my carpets have been since 2005 when they took up the runners they layed down for the delivery driver.

We have a bench dinette & when our nieces were small & traveled with us, I just laid a bath towel under there. That wouldn't be practical, though, for a stand alone table/chairs set up as it'd bunch up & not make it easy to put the chairs in/out.

I like your idea of using the clear plastic mats like those found under office desks. The little nubs on the bottom will grip the carpet to keep it from moving around much, it'll be very easy to wipe clean & it'll be practically invisible. Finding a size that'd fit might take some work, but that sounds like a winner.
