Military jamming SE states GPS Jan 16-24

Interesting note that military exercises will include the periodic jamming of GPS signals across parts of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina January 16th through January 24th.

https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/...itary-exercise

(It's primarily a concern for airplanes - it says the jamming will be effective "from as low as 50 feet above ground" - but I remember when this happened out west a few years ago, and ground GPS was also affected.)

Exercises like this are required for the military to practice operations in a GPS jammed environment, and to grade the effectiveness of GPS jamming techniques and protections used by the military. For jamming to be effective, you have to be about to "hear" it. With the jamming source that far out at sea, 40 miles ENE of Jacksonville, FL, I'd doubt much of that jamming energy will reach very far around the curvature of the earth at ground level.

We went to watch the last night launch of the space shuttle in our boat. When we got about 10 miles away, the signal went out. About 30 minutes after the launch the signal came back on.

Interesting. Commercial airlines use GPS as a primary nav aid but have INS and other options. I'm surprised the powers to be have been allowed to do this. Perhaps the outage will be for only several minutes during the hour.

If my understanding of GPS is correct, I don't see how a signal can be received below 50 ft but not above.

I live in the affected area, and I saw no outages. They may have been for very short periods.

According to the FAA notice, the area of the outage became larger with increasing altitude.
