The ground fault breaker will affect anything that is wired into its circuit. In our 5th wheel, the one in the bathroom had random things not working. Once it was reset, all was well.

How old are the batteries? They can read 12 volts but have few amps available. One battery may be bad (and pulling down the amps). Everything you list points to a bad battery or not getting 12 volts through the shut off switch.

I think all you need to do to verify battery viability is to go to an auto parts store where they can check them. If they are dead they are either not charging as in they are getting charging voltage from the converter or something is wrong with the converter and they are not getting voltage at all. I doubt the last part is true since your lights and stuff work when you are plugged in.

That sounds like a plan.. Batteries first. Then on to the inverter.

Check your inverter to make sure at some point you didn't trip the breaker. It is a small rocker type breaker that is located on the inverter itself. I accidentally tripped ours one time and it affected all the things on the inverter circuit even when we were on shore power.

An inverter takes 12 vdc and turns it into 120. vac. Your issues are the converte which takes 120 vac and turned it into 12 vdc. Do you even have an inverter?

Clean and check your battery cables pay particular attention to the negative ground at the frame. Everything you described operates off twelve volt power.

check the fuses on your convertor. Buddy had the same problem with his fridge. We ended up replacing his convertor. If all else fails check out http://www.rvservicereviews.com/StateList.asp?state=OR for a decent service centre that can help you.

Thank you so much for all the help! It turns out, my MagneTek series 6300A converter is not charging the house batteries, as my initial multimeter test showed. I have set a small solar panel on the roof to trickle charger them, and eventually will replace the converter AND get a larger solar array... Fridge is getting cold now and ask hood electricity is working. And yes, I tested the battery disconnect switch too, it is fully operational. Anyone know the best replacement for this converter?
