Sorry but I'm not paying those prices.

No need to be sorry, but you haven't stayed at a hotel lately, especially at a popular location. I'm not saying you won't find a cheaper location, but you probably won't want to stay there.
Some of the best scenic campgrounds I've stayed at have been while boondocking. But I've enjoyed full service resort CG's in popular locations too.
Each to his own and no need to be proud or sorry for where you choose to stay.

Just a little clarification... boondocking isn't at campgrounds. If on a normal site but no hookups that's called 'dry camping'. Boondocking is out in the boonies on public lands.

We paid in the 100 dollar a night range the first time we stayed in DC, and in Vegas. The alternative is to stay outside the city, and drive in. You pay for location. On subsequent visits, we found cheaper places close to the city, but of course they don't have the amenities of the pricier ones. It depends on your tastes. If you don't want to use the amenities, why pay the extra for them. To each their own. $100 a night is not uncommon in high demand areas.

Thanks for the clarification. Does staying on private property not intended to be a RV spot and with no hookups count as boondocking?

Would for me - Boondocking in RV'circles is often a very Loose Term.
We count anytime we are not hooked up as a Boondocking Day - Wal*Mart - Stadium Parking Lot - Wedding Parking Lot - Friends Driveway - Animas Forks, CO - BLM lands - .....................FHU's or even just Electric counts as a a Non Boondocking Spot. -
But that's Just Me, -

Fort Wilderness has gotten out of hand as well. We pay over $200 per night after taxes for our spring break trip.

Spring break, that's why.
Tropical Palms resort and Sherwood Forest Resort are 2 much cheaper nearby alternatives.
BUT you won't get the Disney experience. For that you pay.

Never stayed there, but Newport Dunes in Southern California is the most expensive I’ve seen.

If yo get a regular site at Newport Dunes, which is really tight, watch their add or go during the week, the spots are $90 - $100. We just booked there for three days in June to get out with the kids. $300.00

We traveled to Leelanau County MI from Waco, TX to visit my mother... Could not find an RV park/resort in this high tourist area for less than $70 a night. To make the long trip from Waco worthwhile, we needed a minimum of 12 nights. It really added up. To rub salt on the wound, I'm not really a tourist as I grew up in the area. So $70 for a place to park was an eye opener. RV parks in Texas can be had for as little as $20 a night.

We seek out those kinds of places/resorts and even own a spot at a similar RV resort in FL. We never rent out our spot. We bought it so it would always be available for us. A lot of owners feel that way. I suspect less than 50% of the owned sites are even in the rental program.
Buewater Key sites can go for way north of $250/nite in winter and you need to reserve months, if not years, in advance.
If you like state park campgrounds that's fine but not everyone does. Different strokes for different folks.

Actually it was Hilton Head Motor Coach Resort I was looking at. Maybe it is worth it if you use all the amenities. The wife and I never use the pools, golf courses, or tennis courts. But good restaurants if they are open now and a nice beach is a good draw. Last year in Maine we stayed at a private camp ground for $85.00 a night that clearly wasn't worth it. Couple years ago we stayed a Sun RV Resort in Michigan across from the lake that was outstanding for $59.00 a night. It had its own movie theater, club house with bar and bands and more.
I don't mind paying as long as we are going to enjoy the site. We definitely lean more to RV Resorts than state camp grounds. Just our taste, to each their own, everybody's likes are different.
We definitely will give Hilton Head a try. Thanks for all the replies.

We seldom use the on site amenities when we go to HHIMCR or any other resort. We go mostly for the location, comfortable sites and access to area attractions. Of course, right now everywhere is a crap shoot.

I don’t mind paying for
Crystal Lakes in Naples
Traverse Bay in Transverse City
Motorcoach in Hilton Head.
Normandy Farms in Foxboro
I do mind paying Encore in Bar Harbor.
Way, way overpriced.
