Unhappy Motorhome Registration

Good mornin',
We'll be buying a 38-40 foot Diesel Pusher in the next 690 days. I checked with the Michigan Secretary of State Office & found that the yearly registration is based on the Base Price of the Vehicle when it was new. That means that it will cost between $750 - $1000 per year for Registration. Do any of you have any Information on the Ins & Outs or Do's & Don'ts of registering a motor home in a different state ?

You'll find plenty of reading on this subject if you'll do a search on "Montana LLC".

As Rusty says, do a search and you'll find a great deal of info and debate on the topic.

My read on it is that people have been doing it for years... often via a Montana LLC arrangement... and I haven't heard of a single member who has had legal problems because of it. There are documented reports of people getting caught and being found responsible for paying back taxes and penalties but these are still pretty rare.

Having said that, it seems clear that the economy is driving a number of states to go after every tax dollar they can and they are cracking down where they can. Strong arguments are made that the LLC arrangement is legal and there is nothing to worry about. I guess we pays our money and takes our chances.

Hi michguy,
Your going to get members coming out of the woodwork on this topic. Everything from the "preachers" to the laissez faire attitudes. There is really only one thing to remember. Thoroughly understand the law in the state you officially reside in. I can only speak for Florida. Florida laws are very clear and easy to understand. If one is a Florida resident and can use a Montana LLC while obeying Florida law then there is no problem. As a resident of Michigan, you will need to understand Michigan law on this matter.

All states have a DMV website. Consider starting there.
