Moving to chase some better weather. We are from Maryland area and are tired of the cold. We don't have it really bad like PA, NY, and north. But its October right now and we've already had some freezing at night. We are just tired of basically 5 months of cold weather. We have family in northern Florida but I think the Florida weather is a little TOO extreme the other direction. So maybe thinking Charlotte NC area. It seems like its 420 miles south of where we currently are, so i think that's enough distance to be much better in the winters. Id assume the colder weather wouldn't drag out as long in NC.

Anyways, we'd like to buy some land and build a home the way we like it. We prefer land zoned AG so we don't have restrictions on the size of a big RV garage, and stuff like that. We are younger/working/w/kids so We'd prefer some acreage and privacy but be close to stuff still. We like "high end" country. Anyone have any towns/suburbs they'd recommend in that area? thanks

By "high end country" I am assuming you mean the mountains of Western North Carolina? Check around Ashville or Hendersonville. Both are very nice areas. Lots of cultural things going on and all the mountain activities available.

try middle tenn. can still find 100 plus acres at reasonable prices.

We live in the country about 30 miles east of Charlotte. As transplants from NW PA, we love the mild climate here. Summers can get a little warm and humid, but thas why e have AC. Check out Stanly County. Land is available, but not plentiful-most of it is agricultural. Building restrictions are reasonable, we have found the people to be warm and friendly and their are more churches than bars. If you need more, PM me.

Have you considered Conway SC? 15 min from the ocean, nice down town.

Check out Crossville TN. On the plateau and is cheap to live there. Is a retirement community in between Nashville and Knoxville. As said earlier, land is pretty cheap and so is building.

Here is a handy link for checking out climates on a monthly basis for potential areas you may want to consider. When the page loads, there is a search box at the top to put in the city's name and you can find out a lot about that city's climate....temperature highs and low, rainfall, snowfall, etc.

We’d moved from the snow belt of Northeast Ohio to a little town (Mebane) between Durham and Greensboro, NC and it just wasn’t far enough South to fully escape the winter. Yes it was shorter and they received less snow but when they did the effect was 3x what we ever experienced in Ohio. They’re just not equipped to handle snow, ice, etc.
The trees didn’t drop their leaves fully until the spring and just a little snow (more like ice) would do a ton of damage. We had a storm just before we left that took the power out for 4 days even though our development had everything underground.
Not trying to discourage you rather just trying to pass on what we experienced.
We now live just outside St. Pete, FL. The Florida summer is like the Ohio winter. Just stay inside during that time as much as possible. Being in the RV it’s a good time to go back and visit where you’re from.

This is an excellent point.
You're currently used to being able to get out and move around when it snows 2 or 3 inches (or more), because the equipment is there to move the snow off the roads. If you move someplace 'south' you need to be prepared to be snowbound at the slightest snowfall. Yes, YOU know how to drive in the snow, but too many other people there don't. So you'll soon find out that it's just not safe until the the roads finally get cleared (or the snow melts off, which often happens first).
Moving from Iowa to Kentucky I had that shock. Traffic at a stand still and schools closed because it snowed at inch or two.

Yea we've discussed this. There's not really a happy-medium place that isnt crazy hot but doesnt snow or freeze. NC is a little better than VA, which is a little better than MD. And SC/GA is a little better than NC.

So geographically, I was thinking northern FLA. But it seems there's not many up & coming nice cities in N.FL. It seems all retirement communities or Jacksonville. Both a no go.

It would be cool to be in Northern FLA because FLA in general has pretty reasonable laws/regulations/taxes, etc. St. Pete area is cool but I wish there was an area like that in the Northern FLA area.

I'm curious what kind of work you do.

There were places we wanted to live around the country but finding a job in those areas was the issue. I envy you in that regard.
