Need advice on Awning Repair Tape
My fifth wheel has a 16' awning that is about 5 YO. I have kept it clean and took care of it. It is starting to crack when it is in the rolled up position. It stays in Fl all the time. The small cracks are on the top. I have ordered a awning PVC cover. Also, while in the camping section at Walmart I saw some rolls of awning repair tape. It looks like clear shipping tape for boxes. I was thinking about covering that first 5 inches the entire width of the awning. Has anyone used this tape? The rest of the awning is in very good shape. The sun has ruined the top when rolled up. Is the tape worth it to get me buy a couple more years?
Thanks
Johnny

I had a couple of cracks show up in our awning a few years back. Tried the tape and it seemed to do a good job. Very sticky and pliable. Where i used it did well but more cracks developed in other areas within months and i knew it was a losing battle. Thinking i got something like another year out of the awning but don't quote me on that.

If it's white like mine was, I got a number of years after using Gorrilla tape.

You could also use sail repair tape. Try stopping by a sail shop. They should have plenty of small scraps they will give you or you can buy some.

I bought some 3 years ago. It lasted a few months is all. @ $12 a roll it was not worth the money. Still ended up replacing slide awning with Sunbrella. Not cheapest but lasts longer.

Try Eternabond Tape. It is made to seal roof cracks, etc.
Be careful though, once it is stuck you can't move it so make sure that it is positioned correctly the FIRST time it hits the awning.

Whats killing me is when we leave Fl and go back NC for the summer. During the winter months it's not that hot. That high summer heat on the rolled up awning is the problem. That Eternabond would be the best but cost a lot. I'll check out the other suggestions and pick one.
Thanks
Johnny

I also used Gorilla tape with good success for the same problem. I ordered extra wide tape online. Two years and counting.

The key to applying tape is to round the corners first. Pointy ends just won't stay on. I tried to tell DH that (I have applied repair tape to tents before), but he was convinced it wasn't necessary. The tape was rolling up within a few months. Took it off, cleaned the awning well with alcohol, then reapplied new tape with rounded corners. It has now been 2 years and it is still doing fine. Then again, we wouldn't have needed the tape if he didn't like cutting corners so sharply and rubbing on trees.. whistling ...

Rounded corners on tape. Thanks, I never heard that before.
