Got fed up with having to store the Leprechaun so we sold the in-town home and bought one far enough out that we now have room to park the RV! Now I need a shelter for it.

I think - think, but don't know - that a steel prefab will work just fine for the purpose, and prices seem very reasonable. I google-ed around looking for a supplier, but so far have not found a supplier that has a product large enough. I'm looking for ~42' long, in case I buy a class A, and a door that's 10-12' wide and 14-15' high. I've seen this kind of thing so I know they exist...

I'm in north-east San Diego county - anyone know of a brand or contractor, or have any advice about this idea?

Go with a 12’ wide as you will loose some with with the trim. Ours is a 12 wide and the mirrors only have a few inches clearance going through. Hope this helps.

Can't help you on a contractor, but would say you're on the right track. Mine has a 12' wide door and is 30' wide, so there is plenty of room to open the slides while it is inside. And a 14' door should be high enough.

I agree with what has been said so far, I store my coach in half of a divided 40x60 metal shed (30 wide by 40 long, 12x12 roll up door offset to one side by about 8 feet) on the family cattle ranch about 20 miles from my house.

A 12 ft wide door is as narrow as I would want to have, this gives less than a foot of clearance on each side of my mirrors, and I have came very close to clipping them a few times particularly when trying to put it to bed in the dark after a long day of driving.

As to door height it depends on the RV you buy, but considering that max legal vehicle height in many states is 13'6" (most eastern states), it is unlikely that you would need a door over this height, 14'0" would give plenty of added clearance. In my case my coach is 11'5" and fits through the 12'0" door nicely though the tip of the radio antenna does scrape the door.

One comment on length, longer is better, I store my 29'5" inch coach in a 40 ft long space, and don't have as much extra space as one might imagine (I do have some 4 ft deep warehouse storage unit shelves in front of the coach, reducing my effective floor space down to about 36 ft, which gives me just enough room for under hood access, while in the shed, and barely enough room to squeeze by at the other end.

I just thought of something after reading the above replies. Published specs say width is something like 101" - I guess that's WITHOUT the mirrors? Width specs are the the coach body only without foldable bits? Wouldn't want to have to fold mirrors in to get thru the door. Now I see how you get to 12' for a coach less than 9' wide.

BTW, is it better to back in as one of the pictures above (thanks for sharing those BTW) or go nose in and back out? I think I have room to do either but it makes a difference where put hook-ups. A trailer would have to back in, so maybe I situate things for that???

And finally, kudos to Tiffin for putting your specs online. They even list a "Minimum Garage Height"!

I've spoken with a few of the RV port providers. If what they offer on their web site or online configuration tool isn't what you need - size or feature-wise. Just give them a call. They do customization all the time.

We just have a carport type storage for our rig it, 43 ft long and 14ft wide. I would suggest whatever you get to get it 14ft or 16 ft wide so you can put your slides out and get to the storage

If you've got the room to drive around it put another door at the back and make it a drive through... lots of flexibility that way.

I like backing in because of the mirror clearance issue. Seems easier to me. Also, as you build, think about where the door to your RV will be. You will want your garage access to be on the same side

I assembled this kit 11 years ago. 14'x14' door. 24' wide, 42' deep.
Spent the better part of a month putting it up. 3500+ bolts.

Allow some length and height if you build some wood ramps to drive the coach up on so you can get underneath safely. Mine are 5 layers of 2x8 - so ~8" more of height, so figure a foot and mine are 6ft long.

If you are building a custom garage for your coach, 2 other bits of advice I would like to give are.

1, put the light fixtures on the side walls not the ceiling, I don't care how well lit the roof of my coach is, what I want is to see into the cargo bays.

2, strongly consider adding a service pit for oil changes etc. It does not have to be a full 5 or 6 ft deep pit, even 3 ft with room for a rolling seat would help a lot.
