Usually, the DMV will take the info off what is on the MSO. Also year models came out in the year before. When I was a kid, LOOOOng time ago, the new year model cars came out in Sept or Oct.

There are 2 manufacturers in most cases, chassis and house. The VIN is assigned by the chassis builder, the model year depends on when the chassis was upfitted. In really slow times a chassis could be 2 years older than the house.
SOS do make mistakes. Mine was first sold in California then Arkansas. Arkansas had entered the model year incorrectly. The SOS went to the CA database for the original year and corrected the title.

The 2026 models will soon be out. Chassis are built long before the coach is placed on top. Major components like engines and transmissions are often even older sometimes pushing 2 years.

We have a 2010 coach on a 2008 chassis. It tripped up the the folks at city hall when I went to register it, but they just sent the paperwork to the state and they took care of it quickly. I would imagine that in states with DMV offices, they could handle it.

This was more common in the past, especially the difference of more than a year, and especially around times of changing emissions standards, or economic slowdowns. With just in time manufacturing, 1 year difference is common because the chassis production date is not the same as the model year of the motorhome, OR chassis.

I guess my question is am I buying a 2000 or a 2001 coach? As there is about a $5000 difference in value on the market.

The completed vehicle is the "year", usually, not the chassis. The chassis may be a model year older but was in inventory, not built upon or driven.
It's a 2001 for the purpose of marketing. It was sold as a 2001, not a 2000.

It will be a 2001. A 2000 yr will more than likely have a 1999 chassis, etc
Only time the chassis yr is a factor is when the chassis itself needs repair.

My MH is on a 1999 Spartan chassis, coach construction completed Apr 2000.
The only thing that makes a difference is when replacing chassis and drivetrain components, vs coach components.

The reason we are asking is that during the inspection. the inspector says it does not have a secondary tag showing. manufacturing date. It only has one tag showing the year 2000. but all paperwork. on the coach has year 2001 My question is, should I pay the price of a 2000 or a 2001? Thanks.

I may be wrong but when you get into vintage, isn't it all about condition? You're going to pay whatever you and the seller agree is fair, not some mythical "book" value.

If there is that big a difference in price on a 25 year old coach, then I wonder if there is a difference between the model years that would easily identifiable, like a different engine, or different chassis features. Both a 2000 and 2001 are so far past any age cut off that it's irrelevant. A 2001 model year, even with the final manufacturing date as built in 2000, is common, and still a 2001 model year. A chassis date of 2000 is expected on a 2001, more than a 2001 chassis date.
