There are rumors going around the DirecTV forums that some HD channels will be shifted back to the 101 bird. If that happens then some rooftop domes might suddenly be able to receive at least some HD broadcasts.

If you don't move much, not afraid of DIY and want to keep the cost down, take a look at this dish...

https://www.amazon.com/DIRECTV-Mobil...satellite+dish

It is not hard to aim using the directv receiver and you can use it with the current HD receivers. It certainly doesn't compete with the Winegard Traveler for convenience, but it's also $1,500 less!

I was already a long time directv customer, I use the stand-alone tripod unit TexasTom referanced, It seems most of the places I camp are to shady for roof top unit. Yes it takes some effort on my part to set up, but after a few times I've got it down to about 10 mins using a app on my phone to aim it. Also allows me to use existing recieiver, so no additional $$

I also use the OTA a lot, I ran HDMI cables to all my TV's

We use Dish with a tailgator. With the tailgator you can move it around up to 50ft to get clear view. We had perfect Receiption in Yellowstone this Month.
Camp grounds in the park are about a 2 out of 10 though.
Tailgator is fully automatic. Easy and I found on Craigslist for $200. We just remove one of the home boxes and put in RV when we travel. No extra cost that way.

We used to call ours the divorce dish (portable), as it seemed in our younger days I was always outside in the rain with the window open trying to hear that "tone" from the TV signal strength page while Dory tried to set up inside cussing at me. No sooner did you get it done, and somebody would trip on the cable or bump the dish and you had to start over. Sometimes it took 10 minutes, sometimes 2 hours, sometimes never happened.

We went to a rooftop automatic and never looked back. Every once in a great while I can't get a signal, but I think back to the alternative and suddenly I'm OK not watching TV

Seriously though, we haven't had a lot of trouble with signal, but we are vacationers and out west its not necessarily a heavily wooded area like the east. If I start having trouble as we travel more I would probably add a portable automatic to our inventory, but I would have to add a VIP211z in the cabinet and disconnect the Hopper when I used it.

Thank you for all the info! We have been told by Directv that a Genie will not work in a motorhome and that we will need to have the basic box with the Trav'ler, which does not allow you to record anything, just watch live. Do you guys agree? Also, since the change to AT&T it seems customer service it outsourced and most of the people can barely speak English and know nothing. Even getting an address change was a major problem. We are rather disgusted at this point with Directv!!!

Dish says the same thing about the Hopper/Joey. Something about the hardrive rattling around. I just don't tell them it is in a motorhome..

We have a Trav'ler and a Genie (HR44) in our MH along with a minGenie in the bedroom. We use all 5 of the Genie's tuners to record anything we wish. As far as the Genie is concerned the signals it gets from the Trav'ler are identical with what it would receive from a fixed dish on a pole.

I don't know who you were talking to but they clearly have no idea what they were talking about.

DirecTV customer service has always been poor; if you don't like what you've been told just hang up and call again. The next person will give you a a different answer!

We just had the genie installed at the S and B yesterday. The tech had to put a different Lnb on our dish. He said it was a 3-D swm Lnb. I am wondering if I will have to change the Lnb on our traveler on the motorhome. Anyone have any ideas on that. Thanks

What LNB do you have on your Trav'ler now?

Don't count on a dome working after the change. The recent change in transponder encoding by Dish didn't change the programming but the new signal compression is not usable by the dome positioning electronics.

Transmission compression can be changed on the satellite on the fly, Dish just did it. Jut DirecTV spent a lot on a satellite and getting more bandwidth will improve their investment.

So it is not the elimination of SD programming, it is the change in transmission.

You will need to change the LNB on your MH. When the tech installed the new LNB at your S&B, they also installed a power inserter in the coax to the dish. You will need to do the same on your MH. I did a quick online search and found these parts which should work.

Brand New DirecTV SWM3 SWM 3 Satellite LNB w Power Inserter 4 Way SWM Splitter | eBay

The splitter is only needed if you are using older style receivers.
