Needing a good mattress

Hi folks,
I'm really needing a better mattress for my trailer. I have a really bad back and what we have now is just not cutting the mustard. The trailer came with a Serta which isn't the worst I've had but bad enough. I bought a 3" topper at wall mart and that really didn't help. So I added to that a "my pillow" topper. It got better but now my feet don't touch the floor sitting on the side of it. I've looked at sleep number but the price is prohibitive. Now I'm looking at the Lull queen mattress. My question is, What have others replaced their mattress's with and how do you like it? I don't want to give up camping. It's been my favorite past time my whole life but waking up in the morning just plain hurts. Thanks for your help.

Mattresses are one of those things that 10 people can have different opinions on for the same model. Get what is comfortable for you. It's important to know if you need a "short" mattress or not.

You are so right and I understand that. It's a residential size queen. One reason I bought the trailer. I'm just looking for opinions from those who have switched. We have a sleep number at home and mine is set on 70 and DW is at 40 so I know what one likes another can't stand. Thanks for the reply.

Sleep number is what I found best because you can make it as firm as you want. If my back is achy, I can firm it up for a couple of nights and then set it down at other times. Independent of my wife side which is always soft. jmo mark PS mine was sent in pieces and you put it together making it very easy to get in your RV.

Thanks Mark. That's what I would do but the problem with the sleep number is the price tag. I may just have to bite the bullet and go that way. I just hate to spend that much on a bed that really doesn't get used on a regular basis.

Sleep number beds are "The Answer". And they have a bunch of models ranging from about 700/800 dollars all the way up to $4000+.

Like you, we tried the mattress topper....better but no solution. We went to the Sleep Number store.....they had a zero interest ( didn't need it, but why not) and sale going on, so we took the plunge. Took about a week to get use to it. Now I am pressing the DW to buy Sleep Number for the sticks and bricks.

I find that my Sleep Number adjustment varies, if I am really tired, or sore muscles, I adjust it up or down a little. Can't do that with any other mattress, regardless of brand or quality.

I purchased a Nuform 11 memory foam mattress from overstock.com for 380$, it's nearly as comfortable as the top of the line Tempur mattress we have at home. Also came with 2 memory foam pillows.

Looks like I'm probably going with the sleep number. I'm just trying to figure out the power issues and locating the pump. Always a challenge but we shall overcome.

Before you go with the Sleep Number, I suggest you give Rick at this company a call, Memory Foam Mattress, Foam Beds, Foam Mattress Pads - Find them all at Selectabed.com!.

I went into sleep number and loved their top of the line mattress, but thought they were crazy to charge so much. Since I had experience buying from smaller local manufacturers I started hunting. This company custom made an adjustable air bed for me for a 1/3 of the price of the top of the line sleep number, and it has more options and IMO better quality. The great thing for those with a bad back is that you can adjust the lumbar region separately, which isn't even an option with Sleep Number. It's the best mattress I've ever had and I didn't have to help pay sleep number's advertising budget. IDK where you are located but they do ship.

I guarantee you will be able to get exactly what you want for way less, which if you're like me makes you happy twice.

Another great resource is www.themattressunderground.com for reviews and resources.

Once you get it set to your comfort level, lets say a #40, you can unhook the hoses and quickly put on the rubber cap on the inflation port. This will hold the air pressure at where you set it. Then you can stow away the pump in an easy to get to location, but out of the way. This will work well unless you constantly need to inflate or deflate the mattress. One thing I will tell you though, the mattress psi will increase as the temperature goes up, and conversely, lower as the temperature goes down....just like the air pressure in your tires. So, my suggestion is to get the level set when the room temperature is where it would be when you are sleeping at night....say 72 degrees. Now when you tow your camper and first turn on the A/C and it hot in there, the mattress will be a little firmer. As the temperature in the trailer comes down, so will the psi in the mattress.....and vice versa in colder weather. We set ours last weekend when we moved it to the trailer and really don't expect to have to adjust it again unless something out of the ordinary happens.

You need to find some way to tuck it under the bed. Temperature as well as ambient air pressure will effect the bed and you may just want to adjust it depending on activity. Our motor home had lots of space under the bed and 115v already fed in. Considering the things we spend money on, our health and comfort should be a priority. good luck, mark

Thank you all for the information you have given me. It's very much appreciated. Now to sift through it all and make a decision. Thanks again.

A little bit late, but we have a mattress manufacturer close to use that specializes in RVs. So far have bought three from them. One for our current TT, one for our little shack in the mountains and one for home. Nice to go in and check them out out and ask for stiffer, softer, plusher toppers. Only way to go and customer made.
