Negotiating a used RV to private party
We have a 2021 Thor Chateau 24F listed for sale for $65,000 that is in like new condition which we still owe $70,000. A couple came out and really liked the rig then offered $62,000 which is a loss of $8000 for us. We were also throwing in lots of extras including kitchenware, accessories. What is the best way to counter without pushing them away? Any suggestions?

should have asked for the full 70k, because everyone is going to throw a lower number than asking price.
Counter them with a 2k increase to 64k. Maybe you can settle on 63k all said and done. 5k hit is bad enough and 8k is worst, you just need to accept what you're really willing to lose on it to get it out of your way or stick to your price and sit on it until someone pays full ask.
just my opinion

The vehicle only has so much value and your being upside down on the loan doesn't change that I think the offer being made is very reasonable and is close to your asking price. One of the problems with RV financing is that the down payments required are too small and the loan terms are too long. One goes upside down real fast. If the buyer is paying cash they have a lot of choices including financing most anything they really want. If financing, they will likely need 40%down as compared to 10% or 15% if going for new. You are competing against those options. How many other calls have you? How many are serious? If this deal can be firmed up your choice to go with the bird in hand or trying to catch the next one.

Note the new 2024's for under $70K

Only you can decide how much that potential extra $3000 is worth. Personally, someone offering to buy at a less than 5% discount from asking price is something I would jump on.
Regardless, you should either counteroffer or accept their offer ASAP. Most people do not just sit around waiting on a response. They continue to shop and maybe have second thoughts. Good luck.

I agree, you should have closed that while they were still hot for it. Sure, they might come back and pay the full 65, but more likely they fall in love with another one. Offering 62 on an asking price of 65 is a solid offer, but they wouldn't mind paying just a little less. You could have probably had them at 63,500.
What you owe and what you're throwing in is mostly irrelevant. The value of the RV and how bad you want it gone are the real factors.

A quick nickel is better than a slow dime. You could be 6 months and 6 payments down the road and end up in the same spot. I'd sell.

What you owe on the rig has ZERO impact on what someone is willing to pay for the rig. You just need to be honest with yourself as to what the ACTUAL value is, factoring in many things.
Would you rather buy a brand new unit (like in the post above) for $70k from a dealer, or buy one that is a couple years old for $65k from a private party? I think most people would rather buy brand new from a dealer if it will only cost them a few thousand more. Without knowing anything else about your rig, the condition, the value, etc, I would think getting $62-63k for it would be a win for you.
Good luck!
Chris

There are a lot on rv trader, prices are below and above yours... you'll have to see if any models are the same as yours and mileage. It will give you an idea if you're in the ball park.

When I sold my Class C in 2009 it was not a sellers market in that the economy was in the dumper, lots of RV's for sale both new and used.
I started out what I thought was a fair price, below MSRP but the RV sat for months with few lookers and no offers. Slowly lowered the asking price until I had an interested buyer and sold at that offer which was ~2/3rds of original asking price. I did not owe any money on it.
Unfortunately you are upside down on the RV, that won't change and every month that goes buy you still have to make the payment on it. It is what it is, cut your losses and move on.

Should have asked just slightly more than you owe and then you would have had more negation room. Also have you contacted your lender and found out how much you owe if it was payed off that day? Usually its quite a bit less than what it it showing you owe as they usually calculate the loan interest into the full term

None of the accessories will add much, if anything, to the price. These are personal preferences and the buyer would rather add their own.

If a 2025 can be bought for under $70k, I don't know why anyone would pay $60K+ for one 4 years old. In fact, if you get an offer over $55K, jump on it!

I'm thinking you missed a great opportunity to sell your RV. Sorry.

If you refuse $62K, how many months of payments will that $3K cover while awaiting another buyer??
