New Dometic toilet bowl will not hold water???

We just replaced the toilet with a Dometic m#320 and it has worked flawlessly for about 3 months. But now it won't hold water in the bowl. Maybe the toilet brush has moved the seal?



Or did the toilet brush damage the seal? Doesn't look damaged or moved, but regardless, it won't hold water in the bowl for more than a few minutes before it slowly leaks out and leaves the bowl dry.



Is this common, and if so, what is the correct fix?

Unfortunately, it's not an uncommon problem and sometimes there's no easy solution. Yes, it could have been damaged by the bowl brush, but don't jump to conclusions.

The first thing I would suggest is carefully wiping the seal with something like a lint-free utility wipe (wear gloves).

If that doesn't fix the problem, buy some CLR at Walmart or a hardware store.
Turn the toilet water valve to "off" and empty the bowl; then pour a few ounces of CLR in the bowl and let it sit. This will help remove any hard water buildup

If that doesn't help you might want to try a thin layer of plumber's silicone jelly (or even Vaseline).

If none of these ideas work, then you have the same problem we also had with a relatively new Dometic Sealand toilet a couple of years ago. The only way we solved the problem was to have a shop install a re-build kit which included a new seal AND the "ball" underneath it. The good news is that the rebuild fixed the problem and it has remained fixed for ~2 years as of now!

If its made like my 510+ it could be as simple as tightening the screw clamp on the bowl,it will pull the bowl down tighter on the ball.Clean the seal and coat with plumbers silicone.

It’s possible for the ball valve to be partially dislodged. If that is the case you may be able to reach in and pop it back in place (gloves recommended but optional).

Don't use any gritty toilet cleaners. They will cause leaks.

Sealand makes a cleaner.

Well, the vaseline fix just made it leak worse.



Thanks Old-Biscuit, I will try the suggested fix, and if that doesn't work, order a replacement.

When ours starts to leak, I use Sharon's toothbrush and gently clean under the "rubber" seal part, then place a few sheets of toilet paper on the white bowl, and pour in a little CLR and let sit for a few hours. The toilet paper will hold the CLR in direct contact. Then re-clean the seal with her toothbrush again. That usually does the trick. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember reading not to use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the seal, but to use silicone Plumbers Grease. BTW, always wear safety glasses, because CLR will not play nice with eyeballs if accidently splashed on them.

Oh yes, I replace the toothbrush with a new one afterwards. At least I try to remember

You probably have too thick a layer of grease on the seal. Wipe it off; enough of a residue should remain to do the trick.

I use olive oil........after thoroughly cleaning seal using my HANDS I then thoroughly rub the seal with olive oil again using my HANDS


Toilet is OEM...2006 and so is the seal
Winter time........olive oil to cover seal for winter


OPs toilet seal is easily dislodged so pressing it back down into opening then pouring hot water into bowl allows seal to reform.
It that doesn't work.....easy to replace as they just pop in/out from bowl WITHOUT having to disassemble ANYTHING (one of the good features of the 300 series)

When not using keep some water in the bowl to keep the seals from drying out. I use a rag and gently wife the surfaces of the seal to clean any residue or grit out. Last time the RV sat a while and I forgot to keep water in and I also had leakage. Wiping and a small film of vaseline fixed the issue. If freezing is a fear then some mineral oil or vegetable oil in the bowl will help keep the seals lubed. Water off, add oil, flush, work valve a couple times and re-add oil. I avoid aggressive brushing around that area.
