So glad that worked out. The last thing any decent law abiding human being wants to do is wound or kill another. If it is my choice it would never be necessary. Since the choice to put me or a loved one in danger on the road is up to a criminal, I will always choose to protect myself and others lawfully when they make that choice.
I will do anything I can to avoid it, like move on, attempt to deescalate, even give up my belongings until it is clear that I or someone else is about to be harmed and then react accordingly.
Criminals do not obey gun laws, they only lessen the ability of good people to protect themselves and that is not right.

Before any of this can be enforced, the new laws are already being challenged in court as unconstitutional. Maybe now that we have logical people running the country again, some of these moronic laws will be overturned.
I was just sent the House legislation last week, that the Republicans are pushing, that will make "carry permits" reciprocal in ALL states. Maybe someone has the HR number, I erased it from my text messages.

Any national legislation must have a stand your ground provision. The one I read said non-residents would be bound by local laws. That means no carry in places like Chicago when passing through, or New Jersey / New York.

Thankfully this is incorrect regarding Chicago and Illinois, I am not sure about NJ, NY, RI and some of the others. In Illinois there is one law the same state wide including Chicago. For a non-resident with a CCW from their home state they may legally carry a concealed handgun INSIDE their vehicle. This means a motorhome or a tow vehicle is legal as long as you stay inside the vehicle. However if you step outside the vehicle even to pump gas the handgun must be secured inside the vehicle.

This link takes you to the Illinois State Police page that explains rules for CCW in Illinois. Scroll down to section 430 ILCS 66/40 for non-resident rules. Jim.

True and some states can be very picky. If I must pass through Illinois it's no stopping until I hit the border.

Traveling around the country with firearms can get you in some legal trouble, especially if you're on the west coast or up around New England. The rest of the country, except Chicago, is pretty sane. There is a lot of support for 50 state conceal carry reciprocity in the Republican Congress. I suspect this will be one of the issues addressed this year. Nationwide carry was authorized by Federal Law over 10 years ago for active and retired Law Enforcement officers and it has worked well.

NY has a law that attempts to override the federal FOPA (Firearms Owner's Protection Act). According to reports I've seen, if you get stopped in NY while transporting firearms, even IN COMPLIANCE with FOPA, good luck. Apparently they have been known to arrest first and ask questions later. You will have to fight to get them to recognize that FOPA even exists. Also, FOPA specifies that you can safely and legally transport firearms from your home state to a destination where they are also legal; problem is, if you stop overnight in NY they determine that your have made NY your destination.
NY has NO reciprocity with any other state.
NJ may be even more stupid. They apparently aren't quite as bad with FOPA as NY, but DO NOT get caught in NJ with hollow point rounds. As I understand it, that's a felony. Again, good luck. Also, I don't think they have CCW reciprocity agreements with any other state.

Don, I would LOVE to see a national reciprocity law enacted with regards to CCW or LTC or whatever it's called in each state. We like to have the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that we have the means to defend ourselves IF NECESSARY. We don't go looking for trouble, we will avoid it if possible, even to the extent of RUNNING AWAY if that is a viable option, but if it comes down to it, I'm not as physically capable as I once was, but if backed into a corner, we prefer to have the legal means available to defend ourselves.

Here is an informative website for those who have concealed carry permits from various states:
Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity Maps - USA Carry
It allows you to plug in your state of permit and see which states you have reciprocity in. There IS a disclaimer at the end of the home page that says that they try to keep the list as updated as possible, but the final decision is up to the individual.

That site is either down or extremely busy.
