New to RV life

Hello all. We are new to the RV life thing. We have not yet set out on the road as yet, but we have the RV ! ..a JAYCO 24b.

1st we have to sell our building, then we will be on the road looking for a new place to settle.

I have a question for this group of RVers -
Both Barb & I are photographers. Along with the regular travel photo-thing, I had another idea and may want to publish a book about it.

A little history: Back in my 20s 30s and 40s I was an editorial/fashion/portrait photographer in NYC. I stopped doing this for a living about 20yrs ago, though my main focus in photography today is still shooting people.

Here's the Q for everyone - How would you feel if you were at an RV park and someone offered you and your RV companions a free portrait?
I would like to do this at every park we stop at, then when we settle, put all the photos together and publish a photo book about the people of the RV life. The focus will be about the 'people', not the national park [still photo-portraits].

...good idea?

Best regards, Dave and Barb

Personally I would say no thank you. Now, most private parks discourage commercial endevors within the park. Taking pictures is one thing, using peoples likenesses withoit written permission as you know is a giant nono.

Have to agree. Also who would buy a book of strangers pictures?

Now a book on the scenes of North America? Yes I know there are lots out there but always room for another.

Sorry, welcome aboard.

FYI - this wouldn't be a commercial endeavor. It would be a personal project. A book would likely make nothing.
This isn't something we would just do blindly.
1st we would ask the park. After we get an ok from them we would pass some fliers out for the day we would be shooting.
Anyone that wanted nice portraits could come - no cost -
We would provide a file of the images, either by disc or email.
Those that didn't want a free portrait wouldn't have to [guess that means u]. Parks that wouldn't allow it, the buck stops there.

...maybe you didnt understand my post.

best regards. dw

I answered on the 'other' forum. I don't see a point of a book of formal portraits of people I don't know.... another invasion of privacy.

Everyone has a story.

Many people are interested in other people's stories. Any many people love to tell their story. Many do not. For those not interested in telling theirs you just go on until you find people who do want to tell their story. Seems like a simple idea. No one is forced into it. And some will find it interesting.

Good luck on your endeavor!

I'm sure my wife and I would like a free portrait or more casual professional photo.
People should understand that I'm sure you would ask and need permission to include in a publication. Sounds like your not making express permission to publish contingent doing portrait.

iMO- There would be a lots of no takers. RVers are a very mixed lot as you will learn. What ever make sure the subjects sign a release form where it is very clear what you intentions are.

As others have said, staged portraits would not not sell well. If you were to weave more natural images into a narrative about RVers in various locations or their experiences. You need to tell a story with pictures and text. There could be endless approaches to such a project.

IMO your story would be better if your subjects truly felt like they had some presence or ownership in the story, not just a spot on some page.

LoL

I guess as long as you get all the needed permissions and possibly even take CG photos that would be given to the CG owners that they could use in advertising, would work out fine.

Don't be discouraged by naysayers. Many RVers are very conservative in their personal life. With that said there are some that have a great story and it may be interesting to others. Heck, you might even meet up with some well known public figure.

You need to put a business plan - and it would be a business - together and see if it's viable. Yes, you may come and talk to us ata CG as we are willing to chat with almost everyone but, no, we wont be a part of a book
