New type water softner

I have used the usual water softeners that require salt. When checking to see if any new technology was available, I came across this. Does anyone have any experience with this new type?

Seems to have been around a while (5+ years) so it may be viable - reviews are positive, that I can find. Nice and small too.

We installed a similar softener in our home because we're on a septic and could't use a conventional system. It's better than not having a water softener, but it's not as good as the type that uses salt. Ours didn't eliminate hard water spots, but it probably cut down the lime build up by 70-80 percent and it was much easier to remove what did build up.

We used ours until it was time to recharge the chemical it uses to neutralize the lime. By that time we'd had enough time to design a drain field for a conventional water softener and the difference in performance between a conventional system and salt-free system is noticeable.

I don't know what water softener tablets contain, so I can't really offer any advice there.

But do you or any of your friends have a condensing tumble dryer ? If so, the water that collects in that is ideal for steam irons ( just filter it through a piece of cloth to make sure there's no fluff in there ).

Alternatively, for a short-term fix you can buy bottles of distilled water from the likes of Halfords ( and probably most hardware shops ) - it's used for topping up car batteries ( the older, non-sealed type ), but is just the same as what you put in an iron. It's not the cheapest solution ( though not mega-expensive ), and would probably be better for a short-term fix rather than risk damaging the iron.
