Newb ?s Mileage, Insurance....

My wife and I are looking at purchasing a Class C motorhome between 25-30ft. What is an average cost of insurance? Also most of the MH we are seeing have the Ford V10. What kind of mileage can we expect out of one of these? Is the Chevy 454 or the older Ford 460 stuff a better option? I know that they are all thirsty but would prefer to have the best option. Thanks in advance.

Cost of insurance is a hard number to advise you on as it varies by states, cost of unit, miles driven, and so much more. However, I pay a bit over $400 a year for my 14 year old 31ft Class A through Progressive.

As far as MPG, not sure you will see a lot of difference in a V10, 460, or 454. Set you expectations in the 8-9 mpg range over several trips and tanks. How you drive, where you drive, what gas you put in it will have a bearing. You might get as high as 10 sometimes, low as 7.

Insurance costs go off of - where the vehicle is located, what type it is, what your driving record is and if you have someone else that might be driving it what theirs is too, it might also include what your credit rating is - lots of stuff to figure out insurance. Case in point, our insurance for MI was just over $1k but moving it to CA with everything the same it went down about half.

Mileage also has to do with how you drive. If you drive like you are on a race course then it will be lower then if you follow most of the road rules.

All I can say about ins. cost, is SHOP Around for $rates. Mpg at 60mph with a v10 was 11-12. I am happy.

A long time ago when we had Class C MH's, I preferred the Ford 460/V10 engines. They both provided good power for what we used our MH's for an OK MPG. I would not be afraid of a MH with either engine, but would take the V10 over the 460, all else being equal.

Why the V10 over the 460? Better on fuel?Power? or Just availability?
