Newbie who didn't come to irv2 first
He did zero homework before going winter camping in a van. It's a good thing he rented(at $550/day) instead of buying.

As soon as he said "Luxury camping" it wasn't worth more of a read. That van is far from "luxury". Had a port a jon...

That didn't go very well. My first trip out was in a pop up, in the winter, Cachuma Lake is really not that cold so I was cool. 1983 was a very good year.

Exactly.
Complains about no electricity and can't figure out he needs to connect the van to shore power.
10:1 he's a college grad.

This is why , soon, there will be a glut of RV.s on the market. This clueless guy ( who has followed the van camper market for a couple years) is a great example. People expect just to push a button ( I know I should pay attention to the orientation but bla bla bla) and have it work. RVin just isn’t turn “the key” and go. Nor do you climb in a box and have it be a 700 soft apartment on the inside. Great rv buys are on the way , just be patient

What a stupid article. The fellow had no clue and did no prior learning before he jumped in. I can't really feel sorry for him.

I think that story may have been "embellished" a bit. Surely no one would spend that kind of money to rent a van and be that clueless on how to do anything (like plugging up to shore power in a campground)! And I'm pretty sure that was a cassette toilet, not a "composting" toilet! Oh well. More room in the campgrounds for the rest of us!

I'd bet he bought the NASA cap at a thrift store.

Actually, I can believe that this guy was that clueless. Having come from the boating world I have met a number of folks that ran out and bought a boat without having any knowledge about them whatsoever. Fortunately most of them managed to damage the boat and not cause serious injury to anyone. The mere fact that he had to enlist the aid of a friend to drive it for him because he was so intimidated by the sheer size of it tells you that he has no clue. Sadly it seems to be more and more commonplace that people leap into something that they know nothing about and get themselves in trouble.

So that’s what a “big” van looks like. ‘24 ft is intimidating’ Sure glad he didn’t rent a full blown RV.
