We have the verizon nationwide plus canada plan mo to mo. Very little cov in the rural areas, have not had any for a week up the Cassiar hwy. PUr a calling card yesterday and are using pay phones, still a lot of those in Ca. did that on our other trips to Ca on our boat on the east coast and that works.
Using wifi in cg that have it, some want as much a $10 for one day to use it, those we decline that is a rip.
Bottom line can stay in touch just not immediate.
Do NOT miss the Cassiar road.

Exclamation

I got an email from some friends that are full timers and make the trip to Alaska every year. He said the last 100 miles of the ALCAN in Canada was pretty bad this year.
Go Slow.

The Top of the world is good just watch the speed, at 10 under your good. Then watch the flags and cones on the edges for bad spots. The road is really quite smooth(remember it is gravel) but the dust is bad. Road from Tok to Glenallen is one to watch for whoop-dee-doos are not marked well if at all.

We use skype when we have wifi in Canada, DO NOT use skype with your Verizon air card, way too expensive.
We have had good luck with skype in Ca of course it depends on connection.
When we arrived In Skagway, Ak we double checked with Verizon before using the air card to make CERTAIN that we did not pick up a Canadian tower.
Noted the date, time and to whom we spoke.
With Verizon one cannot be too careful.

You all are way ahead of us on the 'road to Alaska'...plan to enter Canada this Wednesday above Bonner's Ferry on 95. We'll probably hang a right at Golden to Lake Louise and then on to Jasper on 93. From there, nothing's cast in stone...anyone gone north on hwy 40 between Hinton, through Grande Cache to Grande Prairie? Road conditions? At any rate, whether it's right or left on 16 at Jasper, we HAVE to start at mile '0' in Dawson Creek. SO much to see...so little time...

We're both getting excited. This is probably 'the' most loosely planned adventure yet...a little scary, but exciting. Safe travels everyone, Bob

BTW, for those traveling to Alaska or though out Canada...POST! For those that have, keep 'em coming. Love this thread. It's just great to read about the things you all are doing and the things/places you are seeing.

Border Crossing Canada to US at Skagway

After a half dozzen crossing it finally happened.

Discussing the fresh fruit and vegetable issue with a freindly US Border Agent, in his own words, "the rules keep changing". So what I relate now may not be in effect when you cross. Took our fresh mango but our fresh CUT tomatos was OK, fresh cherries OK, dried peppers, NOT ok.

From now on we will NOT have fresh veggies nor fruit on any crossing!

Forewarned is forearmed.

About the great mechanic shop in White Horse, Yukon Territory, we did post it to

Glad Skype should be okay. We are sitting in Conrad, Montana and the weather has been Rain, Rain and Rain. Today is first day of some sunshine and we are going to Glacier NP and see some wildlife. We are crossing the border on Friday 6/3 and will be in Lethbridge for a couple of days then to Banff on Sunday 6/5 and Jasper on 6/9. I hope to meet some of you. I have a Wildcat with a TW200 Yamaha motorcycle on the back. Stop by and say hello

Jan and Bob,
We endorse a loosely planned trip. When we left La. in april the only date "certain" is to leave Alaska by sept 1 and return home by Halloween or so.
Someone on a ferry boat today, Skagway to Juneau, asked where we plan to stay tomorrow night? Dont know, sometime during the day we will decide. One thing that is fairly definite is we do not plan to do more than 200 miles. One time on this trip we fudged and made 249, not deliberately.
Will leave Skagway going toward Tope that is abt 500 plus miles, the couple who asked is going ALL the way to tope tomorrow.
Different strokes------

Has anyone taken a Good Sam or Tracks tour to Alaska? The price of the tours seems very high.
