OMG, my tire came off and passed me!!

On Friday my wife, daughter and I were on our way to the OU parents weekend. Easy trip, only 180 miles from Frisco. I had checked all air pressure and other normal pre-trip items and found no issues. We were about 20 miles into the trip when I felt the RV shimmy. I looked in my mirror and saw my tire off the RV and running beside me.

I was VERY lucky to be able to pull off in a safe place and the tire went off the road about 250 yards into the ditch. I was able to capture the incident on my dash cam:

It turns out that ALL of my lug bolts had sheared off for some reason. My best guess is that when the tires were mounted they over torqued the lug nuts and cracked the bolts. I have a ticket in with Entegra and they said they are going to replace the lug bolts on all wheels and replace the two wheels that were damaged during this incident.

Has anyone else heard of this type of issue? It was very scary and could have really hurt someone.

Yes! Happens all the time when lugs are, put,on with too high pressure in an impact gun! Disposed to just run them in enough then tighten with a torque wrench! But that takes time and time is money!

Sounds like Entegra is taking good care of you. How many miles on the odometer?

I had a dimwit put lug nuts on so tight that I had to chisel them in half to get them off for a flat tire!

wholly crap that puppy was moving on out.
good thing you stopped without incident and safe.

was this the tag or main drive wheel?
did it do any damage to the bus

saw one come off a dodge pickup a few years ago and it had a mind of its own.
yours took the safe route off the road.

thanks for sharing

I could see that happening real easy. Not sure if that is Ford or Chevy but the Ford would be torqued to what, 150? If the idiots at the shop used impact gun who knows what the torque is. I demanded my shop use torque wrench. Sitting there watching him with supervisor, tech uses impact gun with no torque stick to tighten all nuts. I yelled to stop and then asked supervior, how do you know if they are over-tightened. He said they would use torque wrench. So, there you have it, even the supervisor was clueless. Checking torque on an already over-tightened nut does nothing but show the torque value has been met but not over done. The other issue is lugnuts put on backwords, although not likely with Ford (at least on the F-53) having washers on the nuts.

My coach only has a single rear axle so this was the outside tire on the driver side. The inside wheel was hanging on for dear life (ours!) and did it's job admirably.

The tire did rub against the coach and left "skid marks" down the side but nothing too big. The wheel taking a leisurely stroll off the road and exiting nicely into a ditch was the best possible outcome.

There was a set of duals that came off a road trailer near Atlanta several years ago. (I-85) a fellow hit it, injuring him and totaled his car. I don't believe they ever determined what truck line owned them

Sure was, there have been many folks injured or killed by runaway tires bounding thru windshields.

Tires with their own mind

I had 2 come off not on a RV but a Loaded Gasoline Trailer. Beat me to the Gas Station I was to deliver to. They really pickup speed with nothing to hold them back!!!A fellow driver had one go over divider and flatten a Toyota Pickup.Drivers are always loosing tires from tire racks. Pickups and suv's drop them also.Companies used to tell you if you loose tire from the rack deny you had a spare.

In the interest of saving time and money some tire changers skip the steps of snugging down the lug nuts, even skip the tightening sequence, they just start the nuts, grab the air wrench and tighten nuts as fast as possible.
Oh, and the re-torque after 50 miles requirement, even some owners skip that.

and again, thank goodness you and your family were not hurt or worse.
I would have not been as calm i think as you were in the video.

i will watch it a few more times as an educational moment

even the car in front stopped and seemed to be interested in your well being.

The young man in the car was amazing. He walked the fence line with me to look for the tire. I ended up sending him away so I could change into better clothes and bug spray for a wilderness excursion to find the wheel. It took me 25 minutes and I finally found it in head high Johnson grass where you see it land in the video. The fence just down from that area was broken and I thought the tire went even further down the hill into the field.
