Anyone who is so hung up on their adult kids and grandkids that they can't have their own life, has a serious problem.

Even momma birds know when to kick the chicks out and get on with life.

Cell phones and computers keep all of our bunch in touch.

Dianne, sorry to hear about your back surgery and having to put off trip. This thread certainly did take on a life of its own. We are spending a lot of time at Twin Lakes now and plan to get down to New Bern soon.

Take care,

Kate

I reread my original post and I honestly didn't see where I said I was so hung up on my kids and grandkids that I couldn't get on with life! We travel a lot and enjoy our trips, just never been gone so long, there is nothing wrong with being close to your kids or grandkids!!

Dianne, I think Ruby2sday was referring to folks in general, not specifically you. At least that's how I read it.

Hi! back again.

i just want to say that this discussion sounds a lot like the ones that play out between stay-at-home moms and working moms. there seems to be a great divide between the two.

the hubby and i went out to dinner the other night and sat a table away from 3 women and a man who were discussing the same thing we all got into, and their conversation didn't get any further. the woman who said it was best to live away from your family was a native of Chile, and she was on her own here, while her kids lived elsewhere in the states, and her folks and other family still lived in Chile. The woman who was for families staying together said that her kids were in high school now, but once they 'moved out', she would follow them and they were all ok with that. the other man and woman didn't really say much, but they seemed to be split also.

this, among other things (i.e. working, war, politics, religion, etc) seems to be a very sticky subject and has people very polarized. that said, i think it's very rude to for someone to say someone else has a 'serious problem' just because feelings and beliefs differ. like Anna, Stacey and I's discussion of this, there's a line between intelligent bantering and harsh criticism.

To each his own.... what is perfect for one family is a problem for another.... Some people need to feel that what they are doing is the best for everyone... guess it makes them feel better.

To get this topic back on track.....

My 10 year old grandson and I have begun using AOL's Instant Messaging. It is great!! We have a little chat every morning whether I am in the same town or on the road. I don't use AOL, but you can still download the IM software and use it.

Haven't seen Di on lately and she spoke of back surgery. Di, you on-board? Anyone know?

I am the oldest of 4 girls by 11+ years. I moved away first when they were all still little. It was harder for them because they all looked up to me. (didn't know it at the time) Now that we're all grown up, they've all left, come back, left again. Modern technology is great. I have my laptop everytime we go camping, most campgrounds now have wi-fi free or for a small fee. So whether camping or at home we all just log on to Yahoo webcam and chat. We can even conference all 4 at once. My baby sister in now in NC expecting her first child (the 2nd grandchild) she's very homesick and wants my advice on pregnancy, etc. so we do go online quite often. It should be great when the baby is born. Not quite the same as being there but better than still pics.
