Onan Generator 5500 Code 14 after heavy load turns off

I have a Onan Generator 5500. Everything seams to run really well. No bad hesitations or anything. If the generator is running and I Run the microwave or coffee maker the generator powers it just fine. As soon as the microwave turns off or coffee maker stops making coffee the generator turns off and issues code 14. Code 14 is "Over Frequency" . I checked the Frequency during the problem and it runs at 61-62Hz at no load. Drops a little when the load is applied and then when the load stops it jumps up to 68 Hz and then shuts down. (Issuing the code 14) . I've read some stuff talking about adjusting the govener spring or a new carburator. I'm not convinced because the generator seams to run great. There is never a hesitation. I would think it would be running rough or something if it has a carb problem. But if anyone has had experience with some problem like this. I sure would like to hear they had a similar situation with the genny running and sounding fine also. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I thought I'd post a follow up. In short I was able to fix the problem. I spoke to a friend of a friend who used to have an RV Service business. I explained my issue and he said he was pretty certain it was an adjustment with the govener. There is a 10mm bolt on the top of the spring that adjusts the tension of the spring. I set up a Voltmeter that has a Hz setting and while loosening the tension of the spring lowered the Hz down to 60-61 Hz. After this I tested loads starting with small loads to the generator and gradually adding to that. Each time turning loads On/Off. While doing this I observed the Hz readings. That simple adjustment fixed everything. Hope this may help someone else.

Check for governor linkage possibly binding or sticking. If all is perfectly free, the governor settings will need to be adjusted. There is one way to adjust properly and many ways that are wrong. If you have a service manual and a fair amount of patience you can probably do it your self. Beware of the acquaintance that wants to jump right in and 'getter all set up in a jiffy' You will more than likely need a lot more time to sort it out.

I type slower than you. Glad you got it sorted out.
