onan generator problems
Hello all, I am a new member on this site and i am looking for help with my onan generator. the generator was running while we loaded for a 5 week vacation with 3 young boys, the following morning when we were ready to leave the the generator would not start! i doesnt even turn over so i opened the front of the coach and observed the light blinking indicating low oil pressure and service required. i checked oil it didnt seem to low just under half, added 1 qt. and still no turn over. the blinking light now only indicates service required. we are in mrytle beach, Sc. on our way to Mass. if anyone knows what i can do to get this gen running for the reat of the trip would certainltly help. the generator is a 7.5 quiet diesel

If you get the Service Required indication (3 blinks), then there is always a secondary code. What is the secondary now that you added oil?

Push the start button. when you get the three blinks, push the button again 1 time. Now count the blinks. Be careful and watch for a pause. For instance 3 blinks pause 5 blinks would be 35. Call Onan and they will tell you the what the code means.

Once you get the three blinks, push the stop side of the switch one time. This will give you the secondary code, ie. three blinks, pause, then 1 to nine more blinks.

Since you haven't listed the model of your unit, I'm kind of shooting in the dark here, but I will try to help. I have a troubleshooting guide for a model HDKAJ and HDKAT 7.5k genset. If yours is either of these models, a fault code 32 means: low cranking speed fault (cranking speed less than 180 rpm for more than 2 seconds). There is a 5 step troubleshooting process for this fault, but only 3 of which can be done without specialized test equipment. So here you go:
1. Inspect fuse F2. If blown, inspect wiring connections for shorts to chassis or other shorts. Replace fuse and repeat test. (F2 is located behind the access plate on the operators console on the genset, just above the start switch. There are a total of three fuses, F2 is one of the 15A's).
2. Check battery voltage at the genset terminal - should be 11 +or- 0.2V or above. Replace/recharge battery as necessary. (I have seen corroded terminals at the genset.)
3. Inspect battery connections at the terminals. Check DC system and cables. (House batteries)
Keep in mind, in most cases, the genset is powered by the house batteries, so if they are low, you can get this condition.
