One Fewer Snake Thing-ey

42 3/4" plus 2 1/2" head. At first sight, it was the largest Copperhead ever in history, recorded or otherwise. He was villainous because he lay in wait in the V of my screen door--stalking its prey! I walked right into his trap. Why he didn't strike is beyond me because I was dead meat as I opened the screen. It clearly had every intent to crawl through the next opened door and head straight for under my bed, or in it!

Did I mention this was at night . . . a very dark night with no moon and only spooky wisping clouds, much like hanging dead cypress moss.

Fortunately, I left my porch light on. Failing that, my foot would now be halfway down its throat as little razor teeth did their nasty work. I went for my six-shooter, a trusty 5 foot idiot stick engraved with Ace Hardware and sporting a black blade and notches in the handle for every, well I'm not sure, but they must be for every somethings. The fearsome RV monster danced one way; I danced the other. Yellow-eyed, evil serpent versus the steely-eyed Hero of the West.

What a contest! You SHOULD have been here. (If you had been, I'd have handed you the shovel and exited stage right.)

We can sleep better tonight. Well, you can; I intend to have bad dreams for a week.

Jerry

Well, Jerry, at least you know how to dance. Bad dreams for only a week? That encounter will certainly get the blood a pumping. Right? Glad all is well.

Oh I know what they look like! I have been up close and personable many times. I don't kill snakes, but have relocated many. I am not afraid of them but show a lot of respect. They will still put a lump in my throat when discovered unexpectedly. I took my Bride rattlesnake hunting many years ago.

I don't kill them either, but Copperheads and other venomous snakes are worthy of a lot of respect. I haven't found Copperheads to be very aggressive, though (but water moccasins are a different story!)

I always wondered if the deep-rooted fear of snakes that many people have is a Biblical thing, ingrained along with a Christian upbringing?

Yep a Cotton Mouth can ruin your whole day when they drop out of a tree into your boat. I had a friend shoot 6 holes in the bottom of his dads new boat. The snake got away.

The laundry Fairy is probably very busy now on cleanup duty. Ha ha, duty. He said duty! Lots of snakes here on our lake in Central Florida. They still startle the heck out of me. They are like gold, they are wherever you find them.
