Open Roads
I’m looking to going to Alaska this year and I was wondering if Open Roads worked best out west. I have seen that it doesn’t work that great for me where Walmart has fuel stations. For most campers the apps works great but since I have a auxiliary tank the app doesn’t work, I don’t save any money but most people do save money

Not exactly sure of your question .
Are you having problems with an app ?
Should you be after fuel pricing along the Alaska Highway through northern BC and the Yukon ; be aware that ; fuel delivered to every station comes up the same road your driving ; so the station's cost of the fuel , and the price they charge goes up accordingly .

I have never had any problem in the west with using the Open Roads card at truck stops. I was not aware that Wal Mart even accepted the card.

Can you explain this? You must use the truck fueling lanes with the “open road” program. I don’t understand what effect an auxiliary tank has on your ability to use the program.

Lt Dan, I think he is comparing the pump prices of Walmart Vs OR truck locations. I've found the OR pricing to usually be cheaper. Walmart does not accept the OR card.

The Open Roads card gives you OPTIONS. We don't have a lot of truck stops near us that it would save money by using Open Roads. We live out west and anywhere along the coast you won't find truck stops.
We have a second card, PenFed, that gives us 5% off of fuel purchases at he pump. When we start looking for fuel, I often have to compare the two, sometimes it cheaper for me to use my PenFed card at a Chevron, that is right next to a Loves.
We found the best Open Roads prices are with T/A and Petro. About 90% of the time, Loves and any station where I use my PenFed card are about the same price.
So......as I first noted, stations and use of the Open Road card may not beat the price of a Costco, Walmart or some other discount card you use. However, it's nice to have options.

I use PenFed too which gives me 5% off if I swipe the card. I can fill my 109gal auxiliary tank and I don’t have to look for diesel for 4 days. I use GasBuddy to look for the cheapest diesel around. I finally don’t have any trouble using the Open Roads apps. I stop at truckstops for def occasionally. I live in eastern North Carolina and everything between my house and Sevierville TN I can beat with my PenFed credit card and I was wondering if things were different the farther you go out west. The only trouble is the rewards for PenFed go into a black hole so I use my Verizon card but it is only 4% off diesel but at least you can see the rewards come off your phone bill. The Open Roads apps shows all the Sheetz fuel stations and I can use a credit card with them. There is a Pilot station close to my house and the truckers must be getting a really good discount but they have showers.

Towing my trailer there are some Walmart's that I can not get into, especially when they are busy, but I can get into every truck stop. Also, I have only found a Walmart to beat the Open Roads price one time, and that was in my home town fairly recently. Although I haven't been to CA or out west much.
Like some of the other responders, I really am not sure of the OP's question or point; but I do use and like the Open Roads program.
Thanks,

The Open Roads card can be used in Canada but you will not get a discount. They have many Card Lock stations that the OR can be used where they may or may not take a credit card. When I am in my RV and towing, I prefer the ease of entry/exit into the major truck stops to fuel up. I am not going to try and navigate a Walmart being nearly 60' long to save a few dollars. OR allows me to use truck stops, swipe, pump, and drive away without being worried that I have to navigate in a very tight space.

We just completed a 2,700 mile trip across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee and I used Open Roads at truck stops all along the route, never had any issues, and always saved money over what WalMart/Murphy would have been even with my WalMart+ 10 cents per gallon discount. We averaged about $2.72 per gallon for the entire trip with Open Roads.
I often use it even at home where I have a choice of WalMart/Murphy or Loves or Petro. Generally Petro is cheaper by a couple of cents per gallon.

Y’all must be looking at a different apps than me because I look at GasBuddy and from what I see I can beat the OR price. What I normally do is when I get set up in a campground then I start looking for cheap diesel. We normally go out to eat and normally I can find diesel along the way. I can’t get into a Walmart with my rig. I looked at OR apps around Sevierville TN and I can easily beat the OR price at Walmart and it’s on the way to the Olive Garden, wife’s favorite restaurant to eat at. I have never stopped at a Walmart or a truckstop hooked up with my camper. I normally stop at a rest area for lunch and fill up with diesel use the bathroom in my camper and get something to eat.

The OP is heading to Alaska and of course will travel thru BC and/or Yukon to get there. I don't think he will have a lot of options for diesel fuel stops and in most places the price will be whatever it will be. In some areas he will be happy to find any fuel station, let alone a discount one. Gas Buddy and The Milepost (print & digital editions) will likely be more useful than OR.

When I cross the Canadian border the diesel is about the same price. I’m planning on crossing the border with my auxiliary tank full so hopefully I’ll save some. But who cares I’m going to have fun

Like everyone else, you will still need fuel at some point so you'll just have to make a stop and pay whatever the market is at that point. There's not a lot of choices at some stops, just one at many. The only place that I'll always remember being crazy expensive is Muncho Lake, so avoid it like the plague. I normally filled up at every opportunity just to ensure it was never an issue as many stops are a long way apart.
