I hate to sound like a pessimist but it isn't getting better either. I'm sure there are still more secure places, hopefully some of you can afford the best there is out there. I wouldn't stay in a free place, but then again, I am alone, or would be if I get to RV.
One thing for sure, I would have my own gun, as long as it's legal that it. It still is up here. I'd be sure and include lessons with that purchase too. I know we are in danger of changing the topic here, but it is ok with my since I did the op. I'm not pickie about folks talking about other things, I just like to visit with people, Denise

Yes nwcountry...we do need to be careful when camping or even when crossing the parking lot at the grocery store, which is so very sad.

I heard about that shooting but didn't realize it was at Bastendorf. We tent camped there, and at Sunset Bay for over a month when we moved to Coos Bay in '77 (Dad was USCG). Great camping there but I don't miss living in Empire a bit. Haven't been back more than 6 or 7 times since Dad transferred back to Maine in 1980.
Have you been out to the South Slough Reserve? That's worth a visit if you haven't. Biggest skunk cabbage patch I've ever seen there. Good photo op when they're in bloom.

Yes, Bastendorf, was mentioned in the article, but the shooter first had killed his dad in a spot down in the Southern Cascades of Oregon. Weird, said the guy had no past record. Sounds like we might not hear the whole story, had to be more to it.
Anyway, I haven't been to the South Slough Reserve?? I will check it out though, that's for sure I don't like Empire at all, used to be such a "bar slum" and it doesn't look much better now. I like Charleston best, of all the area. There are many, other places I would rather live, and am checking out some

We're lighthouse hosting at Cape Blanco all of Sept/Oct so if you come this way, drop on by for a tour.

A group of young adults pulled in after the Ranger shack closed, set up camp, and left first thing in the morning without paying. We knew this because they were talking loud and bragging about "how Stupid" the rangers were. They were a little obnoxious, drinking, playing their car stereos loud and urinating in the campground.
We didn't complain but kept our eyes on them, as I am well armed in my MH as I have a CCW(good in all states) so I wasn't too worried. After reading the prior article I guess I should have told the Camp Host to call the Rangers. We did that while witnessing a domestic violence situation in Pismo Beach in May. It was a group of homeless people camping out of an older MH. By the time the Rangers and local police got there 2 had been assaulted, 1 stabbed, and they ended up taking 5 people to jail. According to the camp host they have that problem because no resevations are required from Dec-May, and alot of homeless people occupy spots as long as they can.
Anyway I would go back to Ballards State Beach as it is a nice place, just keep my eyes open a little better.

We hosted at Bullards Beach for several years and have seen this happen on rare occasion (once or twice). Calling the ranger is best in this situation and that's what I recommend if you see this again. The comphosts all have the rangers number and are trained to do the same.
