I wouldn't replace the converter until you correct the battery cabling to parallel. Once you have done that, you may find some 12v items damaged such as light bulbs and perhaps other items, everything very well including your LP gas detector (if it is wired into the 12v as most are). If you do have 12v items not working, such as the lights, I would check all of the fuses first.

You may find your converter and other items do not need replacement. Knowing that the batteries where wired wrong, I no longer suspect the converter to have caused any of the issues, but it could be damaged, perhaps not though, in fact I suspect that it is more likely to not be damaged.

Feel free to share what you find after changing the battery cables back. Good Luck. ~CA

I think someone already pointed that out.

The problem is it looks like you hooked up 12v batteries in series. Not good

Battery overcharging

Hello all. I have some good news to report about the situation I was having with my 95 rv. The chassis battery was starting to boil within seconds as soon as the key was turned. As it turns out, the 12 volt house batteries were wired in series instead of parallel! When I got the rig, this is how it was set up so I just left it this way. Because of this, I was getting the battery issues and the interior ceiling lights not lighting. After several post, I learned of my error and another possible cause for the ceiling lights, the inverter/converter. I fixed the wiring issue and that solved the problem of battery overheating! Thank you all! I also removed and tested the inverter. It is putting out 14.2 volts; the inside ceiling lights are still not coming on. The fluorescent light bulbs have been replaced and still no go. I will check the fuses and the light fixtures again tomorrow to see if power is going to the lights. The major issue is resolved, the rig is drivable!

Great news, it likely your old batteries were the 6 volt type and they would be wired in series.

That's a very common way it's done in many RVs.

As far as the lights, I would be checking the bulbs themselves. The 24 volts may have burned them out, if they were on.

I did. Some were burned out; black spots on the ends. There is no power going to the lights at the ends where they connect. I’m going to check the ballast. Will keep you all informed! The next project will be the generator!

Check your fuses. 24 volts may have popped them.
