Pack Rats Help

We are at a volunteer gig in Arizona. Having problems with rats getting into motor section of our deisel pusher. They have not gotten into house portion....yet!
We have tried laying rope lights around the outside which apparently just leads them in. We have placed rate traps which has cauught one but others seemed to have wised up. Worried about chewing on wires and getting inside. Any help?

Fought Kangaroo Rats fo over 50 years

They love electric wire and hydraulic hose so you definitely need to keep them out

Nothing works completely by itself

Try live type traps with bait along with everything you're doing

You will need a 22 for disposal

Put a light in the engine bay that illuminates the entire area

If you use rat poison you have to have the style that mounts in the bait container that they can't pack off

Check your air filter hoses as they chew that as well and not uncommon to get into the housing ruining the filter

The best thing is a hungry momma cat with a litter to feed

I highly recommend using .22 rat shot. If you want to be quiet and can get a clean head shot use .22 BB or CB caps. I bagged a lot of gophers in my yard using those after getting tired of setting traps.

Try leaving the engine bay open. Anything to keep them from feeling safe from the elements.

Unfortunately I don’t have a 22. Did I hear someone say NEW GUN. Probably tough to do with my AR[emoji12].
Caught 2 with snap traps so far. Hard to tell how many there are. Here in the desert there is a good supply.

2X on bait.

Rats are smart and will learn to avoid hazards if they survive a close encounter with something like a trap.

It can take a while for them to take bait because they are also suspicious of new things in their environment. Make sure the bait containers are properly sized for the size of the rat - big enough for them to get access to the bait.

They can learn that the lights don't pose a hazard.

Stake down the bait stations. You may not see much effect until they start taking the bait and enough eat some to reduce the local population.

This is a tough one because there's no way to physically block them from entering your engine area. Check your engine compartment frequently and remove any nesting material you find.

Pretty much you'll be managing the problem, not curing it.

Have you thought of digging a moat, lol lol lol. I volunteered for the US Forest Service in ID a couple of summers ago and had field mice coming into my living area. Used traps with peanut butter and was catching one almost every night for about a week. I had a 357 loaded with shot for outside but the buggers were great at hiding in the grass. Finally tried a LED rope light. Have not had a single mouse in over a year. Just make sure the rope light touches the ground the entire length of your RV.

Lights in the engine compartment and those electronic warblers work good in conjunction.
Good luck

We had a major problem on the west slope of Colorado. They were chewing anything they could get to. Found out the county school buses use Christmas tree scented auto air fresheners in the engine bays. They work GREAT. Hang two or three under the hood and anywhere else you find a problem. Replace every 30 days. I use them under the hood of tractors and other equipment also.

As far as traps- a medium sized live trap works the best and any food scraps will attract them. Once caught a drop in a tank of water will finish them off.
