Picking destinations

How do you folks decide on destinations? I used to be the head of an exotic car club and used to plan a different drive each month. Now with the entire country available to us with the motor home decisions are harder. So much to see. So many adventures to chose from. We may have to go full time to see them all. So how do you decide?

Personal interest and time allowed.

That is what makes it so great. It's all about what you want to do and when.

Safe travels

We find an area with multiple attractions that we're inerested in, and set up a base camp. Then we make day trips. The hardest thing we've had to learn is that there is NO RUSH. You have plenty of time.

I use RVParkreviews to get an idea of where I think might be a good place to stay and the notes left by other reviewers often has ideas about activities and sights to see. When I have narrowed it down I search youtube for the area and each campground to see what it really looks like.

Think about the weather and the seasons.

We did a lot of planning for a trip to Key West and a few points on the way. That all got blown apart and we just did some local stuff.

Don't try to pack too many stops in your allotted time. Not only tour your destination but tour the surrounding area. Have more of a relaxing trip rather than a rushed one.

Yes, you might have to go full-timing. We picked one or two states during a season. I've saved our road atlas and there are some states where just about every secondary road is highlighted as ones we drove. Plus we drove many gravel roads with the Jeep to explore. We can truly say that we've explored the states and there are hidden gems in each one!

Like a lot of us I have a USA map on the outside of my MH. We have filled in every state including Alaska west of the Mississippi. So we know this year we will start to explore some of the states east. We pick a state first look for a few major bucket list items in that state and then get local information to add to the list. We never make reservations more then 2 weeks in advance and take our time in each state exploring and understand that state before moving on. Sometimes in the larger states this requires some back tracking and crossing routes but it is the adventure we want.

Local google searches are quite valuable, like "visit benson az"

Please, check out some of the GEMS we found. Most are not on a map.

There are so many variables in choosing where to go. What type of destinations are you seeking? Mountains, beaches, urban exploration. Once you decide most states have a tourism bureau that will send you booklets about the things to do in the state. I try to ask fellow campers where they have been and how did they like it.
Good luck with your planning.

I all boils down to you and what you want to see and do. We find since we are limited to 3-4 months at time until we can go full time that we pick an area and concentrate on those states. We try to spend 4 days or more at each stop and take day excursions to see the area. This year for Feb-April we are concentrating on Florida (north), costal Georgia, costal South Carolina and much of N. Carolina. We will spend 12 weeks just in this area.

First thing you need to do is set aside some time............ Then pick an Area you will enjoy.

The time thing is generally never long enough.

The location thing is Generally about the Weather.

BUT..................................if you have not seen much of this country yet it might just be you need Big Loop Tour.

You being from California - pick something that keeps you in the Temperature Range You Enjoy.

So possibly check the weather maps to see where you can go in the Season you want to travel.

Desert SouthWest in the Winter Spring, staying out of the Mountains and the SNOW if you are not a fan of Winter.

Then as the weather begins to break head into the Mountains as the Snow melts - the Rivers and Streams are amazing this time of year - maybe get into Yellowstone in May so as to beat the Crowds (Still Crowds just not Heavy) - then depending on the weather head north or South to be able to enjoy the Temperature and the Snow melt.

Having access to the internet will open up the world as you can see and Know so much more today than we knew in the old Days. So just pick and choose to stay in your comfort zone.

Then in the Summer get into the High Mountain Meadows and Hikes as the flowers bloom and the Alpine areas are amazing.

SO ............The time is NOW.............pick a location and get that RV on the Road.

JMHO,
