Always sad to see, but unfortunately seems to happen pretty much every year hear in Utah. I've enjoyed exploring that area since my parents first took me there as a young child. Fantastically beautiful, and full of wonder, but about as remote as you can get in the lower 48 states. I've ended up rescuing folks a couple times down there, once because of a vehicle getting stuck, the other a couple mountain bikers who got disoriented and lost. Both groups had been ill prepared for the heat and conditions and had run out of water. It doesn't help that cell phone coverage is not available.

My heart goes out to the friends and family, it's got to be awfully hard on them.

Very very sad. I have to hand it to her...she was out living the dream. What a spirit!

I guess we have become too dependent on cell phones... No service, dead battery, whatever...it is a single layer of protection and can come up short when needed most.

Back to the old Boy Scout skills...

Always, always, give your itenerary to a friend...and check-in on a schedule.

If lost or disabled...stay where you are...when you don't check-in...they will look for you...if you stick to your itenerary...it will be easier to find you.

Carry basic survival items...food, water, signaling device, a way to stay dry and warm.

I admit...I know the old rules, but in today's technology driven society...I have become too reliant on a stupid cellphone.

Go well Marlene Clark...your adventurous spirit will be missed by all.

Would it have been better to stay with her rig rather than to try and hike out? Seems like staying might gave given her protection.

We really don't know the whole story here, it sounds like she had food, water and basic supplies with her even though she was miles from her disabled vehicle, so perhaps it was a heart attack brought on by exertion, snake bite, etc. One must remember people do drop dead, it happened at a state park campground where I was staying last week, as I was checking in a staff member came into the office to grab the AED as someone had collapsed at the campground and was not breathing. An ambulance and some police showed up at the other end of the campground about half an hour later, and I heard the next day that the man had passed away.

I carry a DeLorme Earthmate for emergency use. It costs $12 month and for that i can email or text anyone via satellite. For many years I carried a Globalstar satellite phone but it became more than I was willing to spend. I always think if the ability to communicate from anywhere doesn't help me it may help someone else.

I used a SPOT for a few years, then switched over to one of the Earthmates when they came out. My wife loves it for the tracking function as I like to venture out alone quite often, either hiking, or in the RZR. The kid likes it because she can get a hold of us when we're in areas without cell phone reception. Fortunately, we've never had to use it for anything other than peace of mind.
