The tow vehicle insurance usually covers any damage to the tow vehicle and liability to other property, but will not cover the trailer in tow. You need a separate policy for colision damage to the trailer.
Check with your auto ins. agent as they may be as cheap as anyone else or in my case cheaper than anyone else I keep the insurance active on our camper all year round even while we can't camp in the winter
