OK, I'll bite: Why do you need to deionize water?
I know what they do in nuclear power plants, but for personal use???

Vehicle washing with spot free rinse most likely.
I have one from Costco, but note that I haven't tried it yet. Plus it states 22 washes but on a large coach, cut that way down.

Just used it on one of my cars, worked great and actually did dry spotless, and its sunny outside. I would suggest a longer hose coming from the unit to the spray handle, would make it much easier so you won't have to carry it around the vehicle.

Deionizer
Almost bought one 3 years ago. They don’t last very long if you get the portable one. The replacement cartridges are very expensive. If you want to get this type of water just go to a self serve car wash and use the “rinse” cycle and this is what you get. I use the low pressure on the handle. If you squeeze the handle lever it comes out pretty hard. Works great for 2-3 dollars. I never use soap on my vehicles. Makes a great rinse to get the snow crude off. Just drive off and your vehicle will be spotless. May need to touch up a window or mirror. Hope this helps. John

It depends on what you mean by portable. I bought the deionizer from Griot's Garage and it works great. It's about the size of a scuba tank and is fairly heavy when full of water. I mounted it on a two wheel dolly with a hose rack which makes it easy to move around. I can wash the motor home in full sun and there are no water spots even though our water has a lot of dissolved solids in it. The smaller deionizers don't last long and many have really low flow.

I also have one of those, previously been using it for soft water within the coach for showers, etc. That unit still takes salt to regenerate the resins back to where they need to be to collect the solids. That regeneration process is soaking and rinsing the resin in salt water, rinsing in fresh water and you're back to normal. That same process can be done with the sacks of resin used in the portable unit as well I believe. I have the tester so I'll be seeing if it works just as well. I also believe those units last about 1600 gallons before they have to be regenerated so about 4 times longer then the portable unit itself.
