I must be getting VERY OLD... in high school.. after school (and weekends) I went to work at a gas station.. started at 14 years of age.

pumping gas,, checking oil and air in tires... giving 6 packs of soft drinks... dinnerware for a fill-up... Green-Stamps... remember them...?

I also remember Gas station "Wars".. with gas going down to 19 cents per gallon.. and still got "Free-bees"...

I cut my teeth working for Shell Oil (aka “the Yellow Peril” - my dad worked for Texaco) in Detroit. On Telegraph Road we had Service Stations (not gas stations) on just about every corner for miles. Gas was like 22 cents a gallon, and the Feds and Governor got at least half of that. The Good Oil Days!

I think I remember seeing gas for $.12 at a station in Texas in the early 60's. That's as low as I've ever seen it.

My diesel discount is $.08. Are you talking about their loyalty card or charge card? You pump first and then pay?

I have the PFJ charge card to avoid all the hassles mentioned in this thread. The flip side is it might be higher, even with the discount, but it will be hassle free.

To the OP-

I have learned that this practice varies by station. The Marathon I was at required you to go back in. The PFJs do not although I would usually ask (this was before I got the PFJ card).

I did not used to do it this way but now i fill at the end of the day. IF it stops at 75, as it did in Waldon, kY.. I spend the night (As planned) and finish the fill in the AM.. OR pop in the other card adn grab a 2nd 75.

Come to think of it, what's a "station wagon"?
New Jersey and Oregon - you can't pump your own fuel. No extra charge but that is the law.
Maybe there are other states?

Oregon, if you are filling a motorcycle, you can pump your own. And there are some wholesale stations that are unattended where you can fill your own. Mostly for corporate type accounts.

Last Sept. 2017 I was in Klamath Falls Oregon and the attendant said I'm allowed to pump diesel but not gasoline (that was a first for me). And another note, when I installed a free TRANSFLOW 77 gallon tank in the back of my truck. Making a total fuel capacity with truck tank 117 gallons= a lot less stops for fuel, also I get to choose where and when I want to refuel. My 77 gal. tank gravity feeds to the main tank. So if I ever see my fuel gauge start to move off of FULL then I know I'm running on my 40 gallon truck fuel tank. I had so many mixed feelings about removing my tool box, and installing the truck bed fuel tank. But I just sold the tool box last week on craigslist.
