Products Made from Crude Oil and Natural Gas
I promise to not be political so I don't get banned! Given the current focus on and concerns about high prices for crude oil, natural gas, gasoline and diesel, I the Refinery Operations Manager, wanted to make the forum aware of the thousands of items we take for granted everyday that are made from crude oil and natural gas. High prices for gasoline and diesel are the "most obvious" results of high price crude oil. The prices for many, many other items we use everyday (including the laptop, keyboard, monitor, desk, etc. I'm using for this posting) will increase in concert with higher crude oil and natural gas prices. Also, if crude oil and natural gas production are curtailed, I don't know of substitute, economic "feedstocks" that can be used to make the thousands of items we all use every day.
Here is a "broad categories" listing of items made from crude oil and natural gas --> https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/fi...nfographic.pdf
Until crude oil and natural gas prices fall, we all must endure on-going higher costs and inflation for nearly everything we use.
Have forum members seen a list of crude oil / natural gas "products" like this before?

When folks talk about going GREEN they do NOT think about the 'other' uses/products without which they would not have those GREEN machines
Cause/Effect are not part of the planning any more.......

I have not and I thank you for providing the link. Among the most obvious products using petroleum constituents should be the asphalt shingles that keep us dry and the asphalt pavement we walk and drive on.

Don't forget fertilizer.
How would we even eat without oil?
Drill baby, drill.

The last time oil went over $100 a barrel, the RV tire makers raised their prices by over $100-$200 per tire. No one ever explained how the manufacturing of one tire used a complete barrel of oil for construction. At least that's how it appeared. Just wait, tires will rocket up again.
I think electric cars are cool and would like to eventually have an electric truck if it can be towed. However, let the purchase of electric vehicles happen naturally over time. As stated by the OP, I've been telling friends the same thing all along, the Government seems to forget or not understand that EVERYTHING we use in our everyday life is made from oil. You just can't separate the oil used in fuel from the oil used to make products and charge at a different rate.
Here is another big question.....I'm sure many on here are landlords with small to large apartment buildings. Who is going to pay to have fifty 50amp charging stations installed at their fifty unit apartment building? This push for electric vehicles just hasn't been well thought out!!!

Fertilizer is among the hundreds of crude oil / natural gas shown on the list provided. One product not shown that many of us RV enthusiasts use is the wonderful(?) DEF needed for our diesel engine powered motorhomes / trucks. DEF (the UREA portion) and fertilizer are made almost exclusively from natural in different "process units" within the same manufacturing facility.

It's also what has caused a huge dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. It's the single largest mistake we've made in commercial agriculture. Thankfully we now realize our error and we're finally making some headway back to best practice.
Petroleum is in everything. Subsidize a product enough and the producers will always find new and inventive ways to use it. Corn is another prime example. I'd even guess that corn is in more products than petroleum, and corn and potato starch are replacing petroleum-based plastics in many industries.

Yes, that oily stuff that comes out of the ground is turned into countless products. Not sure people realize just how much the world would change if we stopped pumping. Think of the majority of plastics needing replacement. What would replace them? Yikes! Not sure how I'd like wooden keys on my keyboard. I guess if one broke, I could whittle a new one. ;^)

I think the list of merchandise made without using oil or gas would be much shorter.
