Propane Gauge help

Hi, we just got to Wyoming. When we left Southern NM Two days ago, we had just filled our 20gallon propane tank. It seems our gauge is not working. After calling around the shops said it’s not something that fails often. Recommend taking the outside gauge off the tank and cleaning it.
What are your thoughts. It’s very cold here and it would be catastrophic to run out of propane. We are hooked up to 50 amp. Our electric heater does not heat much.
Thanks very much.

Well, I have a much older rig, but my propane gauge worked intermittently until I cleaned the connections to the gauge, now it's reporting correctly. Maybe it's that simple? Hope so.

Good luck!

Most gauges have indicators inside and outside.

The outside one on the tank is mechanical, relying on a magnet moving inside the tank. The needle should be showing 3/4 to full.

The inside one is electric, with a replaceable sender on the outside gauge.

First check the wiring to the tank sender. If connected, pop it out, or remove the 2 tiny screws, depending on brand, holding the sensor on the tank. ( no danger of leaks removing plastic sender )

Now you can use a magnet on the back of the sender to see if you can get the neddle to move. If it moves but doesn't change the tank reading inside it may be bad.

Connecting the 2 wires together will give you a full or empty reading. If that works, replace the sender with new.

This information is helpful. I’m a little worried about getting blown away. Mine has 4 large screws and the two small screws. By removing the 2 small screws am I understanding the small plastic piece in the center can be removed?

Thank you so much, looks like I have 3/4 of a tank left. That should last a few days.
