Propane vs Electric cost per btu

What is more cost efficient for producing btu’s: electricity at $0.10 a kw or propane at $2.00?

When I'm parked and plugged in, I'm going to say electric. We don't have propane any more, but when we did, it didn't cost much because we rarely used it.

In terms of energy, 1 gallon of propane equals 27 KWH of electricity, but the efficiency in specific applications has a major impact on the comparison.

I just need the cost comparisons at those prices. Propane is more and electricity is less for where I’m thinking. I picked rose prices because it’s easier to do the math. I’ll also need to figure in propane efficiency.

Thanks. That tells me what I needed to know. I actually figured it out myself and wanted someone to check my math.

My actual costs when figuring electricity at $0.099 to propane at $2.17 tells me the propane needs to be about 72% efficient to break even. Anything above 72% and I will save using propane.

Is my math accurate?

Propane-91,452 btu/gal. Efficiency-80%=73,162 BTU/gal. Divide by 3412 BTU/KWH=21.44 X .10/KWH=$2.14.
Taxes and delivery charges need to be considered. For me, propane was a bargain 30 years ago, now it is not worth the hassle in any way. It is usually priced much higher than your proposal.

The prices I’ve stated are actual for the location I will be going to. I’m not figuring in Electric meter costs because I will need electricity anyway. Another cost to figure in is maintenance which I’m thinking will be the same for propane whether I use it for half or all of the heat. Plus I’m comparing radiant floor heat to space heaters. The floor heat feels warmer even though the temperature at thermostat level is the same.

There's math, and real world.

I don't winterize. I set my thermostat for 45 as it rarely gets much colder than that. While the rig is plugged in, the only thing running really is the fridge. The Hot Water heater and furnace are on, running off Propane. It costs me about $28 every 6 weeks to refill. If I were to use the electric heat or for that matter just the electric hot water heater, I'd drive my electric bill up more than that in a week.

So I guess it's really what your "purpose" is.

$0.15/ kW
