PSA: If you have an Amazon account beware of unauthorized Audible charges

I have 2 Amazon accounts the second account I rarely use but exists because the other acct is shared with family.

I see a charge from “Audible Adbl.CO/Bill NJ” $16 in my bank acct. I immediately think it’s a fake charge and my cc was compromised. Then I find that Audible is part of Amazon and people are reporting unauthorized Audible subscriptions being enabled without them doing anything.

I took a long shot and contacted Audible. Confirmed that somehow even though I haven’t been in the account for weeks that somehow according to Audible I accidentally enabled a Gold subscription. Then the rest of the process was like pulling teeth. First a had to get them to cancel it, then I had to spell out that I wanted a refund, finally she said she would remove the cc info.

Of course the woman from a call center outside of the US can’t grasp why I would think this was a concern because she is sure I did it on accident.

So now to change the PW and remove CC info from that acct. You can’t see the charges through Amazons website. I guess you would have to have the Audible app installed, which I don’t. I swore off Audible 10 years ago when I tried a trial and cancelled and they kept billing me.

Thinking about callling the local news stations, they love to make this stuff public. Probably turn into a class action lawsuit.

Anyway, check your accounts and keep an eye out.

Any legitimate Amazon Audible charges will be listed under digital subscriptions and purchases. Audible is owned by Amazon and if it didn't show up it isn't really from them.

For whatever reason, AMAZON is pushing Audible. I found that I was signed up evidently when a stray finger somewhere on my Kindle Fire signed me up. It took me a day or so to figure it out but they did credit my account. I also found that their 'free' books aren't. It's all there in the fine print once you find where that print is in the mass of sometimes useless (to most) lists of information

I looked under there on both accounts. That's why I thought it was fraud. I've seen fake iTunes charges that look like they billed from iTunes but it was a scammer.

I haven't had my kindle out in ages and get my digital books from the local library.

I also looked for an email with a subscription confirmation, nothing. I did get the cancellation email fine.

The kicker? The acct it was tied to didn't have any current payment information. It's been that long since I've used it. So I doubt you fat fingered it, it's pretty sketchy how it happened.
