Quartzsite Gold Prospecting

Okay, a strange couple of questions:

Someone is giving me a gold-specific metal detector. I'm at Q for the next three-four months, and always looking for new fun. So, if anyone knows:

1. Is it legal to wander around BLM land and look for gold? (Did a web search about this, still puzzled. Can't figure out how to tell if a claim has been staked.)

2. Do people do this around Quartzsite with any success?

We geocache around Q and during our travels, we see numerous piles of rocks that indicate the boundary of staked claims. Also if you see what looks like someone has been digging in the side of a wash, it is probably a staked claim/

You would probably be luckier looking for loss jewelry in heavily trafficked areas.

I have a detector and have searched a bit on unclaimed land. There are some gold mines to the ESE of Q.
