Race for Bearings

Hello everyone,
I am going to repack my bearings next week end on my hyperlite HFS29, it has 4400lb axles on it, do I need to order the races from Dexter or can I just go to a auto parts store to get them. If I go to a parts store how can I find which ones I need?
Thanks in advance

Most of the times you take the old shells and bearings to a NAPA and match them up by number stamped or visually. If it's popular, sometimes bearings are right on a hook in the trailer section of the auto parts store.

You don't change race's when you repack.

You probably mean grease seals. They are probably avalable at local auto parts stores.

You would need the part # off the old seal.

You do need to inspect the race for galling, cracking and wear, all is done without removing the race. the repacing inspection process should be performed every 12 months/12,000 miles per Dexter Axle.(pg52) You will need to purchase new grease seals as they are difficult to remove without bending or damaging them.

And if during the inspection of the race, you find gaulling cracking and wear, you also need to replace the bearing that did that damage.
Always replace in sets, often if one bearing set is bad, the other set is suspect due to contamination in the grease.

IF you actually need bearings, you will need both parts, cup and cone. All Dexter will do is supply you with the same type over priced Chinese made parts that may have failed - and my history with them is not good. The bearings in the hubs should have a trade number stamped on them
You do need to compare the existing with the part numbers listed below as manufacturers do make changes

For a 4400# axle, the 'standard' part numbers should be:

Inner - L68111/L68149
Outer - LM67010/LM67048

Most folks when they replace wheel bearings on towables seem to prefer Timken bearings though other well known brands will work as well. Timken bearings now are not all US made, but so far their quality has always been great

Since IC2 did the work of looking up the parts, just buy a set via Amazon, and buy an extra set for spare and replace them all. Buy a grease seal too.

Most moderate size towns have a bearing supply stores if you run into pitted bearing surfaces.
I always used disc brake grease on my non boat trailers.
