Registration
Hello rv family.
When you buy an rv, I know you would have to pay sales tax, but what do the license plates cost on a yearly basis? I should be entering rv market in spring of 2017 with a used DP. Hoping to get a 40ft with a tag axle . Thanks in advance

totally dependent upon your state. AZ doesn't require sales tax from a private party. CA does. OR is very cheap. You need to inquire locally for your state.

Yeap, varies by state. And some states have a personal property tax on vehicles, which often dwarfs the registration fees.
I just paid $60 for my 40 footer in Florida, but that is a relatively low-priced state for motorhome registration.

In Georgia, the 7% sales tax is your one time Ad Valorem tax on your motor vehicle. After that, it's a $20 tag fee a year. Unfortunately, this only applies to motor vehicles and not trailers. The tag for my trailer this year was $290 and the tag for my 2015 F-150 was $20.

Interesting
Funny you mention Montana. I have to learn more about the llc. Thing. Someone said I could register the MH in Montana as long as I knew someone with an address. I actually have family in Montana. Is there a company that helps you set all this up?

Careful as the tax man has a very long reach.
Consider where it will be parked.
If full timing fine but states usually have specific rules regarding amount of days in state allowed before it becoming an issue.
Search forum for Montana llc to learn more then check with your tax agent before taking that action .

The Montana LLC is a topic that comes up fairly often on here. Can it be done? Yes, but....and that is a very big but. You need to find out the residency laws of your home state. Next you need to determine if you can comply with the requirements for your rig to NOT be resident in your state. Then you have to see if you can document your compliance with the laws of your state. Remember the burden of proof in tax matters is with the taxpayer, not with the state.
Even if you follow all of those steps you may have to defend your use of tbe Montana LLC. Being legal and being able to prove it are two very different matters. We have gone through a number of residency audits in our firm over the last several years. One of which took over two years to resolve. It can be pricey defending your choice of entities.

two things that are not typically mentioned when discussing llc, when I looked into to it, financing companies did not want to loan to a llc, and insurance would have been more difficult. I'm not saying these are show stoppers, or imply that they can not be done, just saying they involved more effort than I was willing to put forth.

Great
Thanks for the balanced replies. As a business owner, I should have realized that it's not so easy. Actually, if I have to pay sales tax, it's only 1 hit. I spoke to a fellow NJ rver who said his yearly regist ration was like 65 dollars. I originally was worried about a big ticket annual registration cost.
Now a hurdle I am going to have to figure is financing. I will figure it, but I got a response from a dealer that said his banks won't offer any financing on 10 + year old rigs. I'm looking at rigs 10 years old, in the 70-100k range, and I would rather not self finance that much. I hope my local bank sees this differently. Do private sales ever hold paper on MH deals? I'm guessing no.
Have a great day folks
