I am originally from 65 miles N of NYC. The no cell while driving law was ignored like many other laws. If I come up behind an eratic driver it used to be they were driving while impared (drunk or drugs) now mostly it is cell phones. It doesn't matter if they are hands off or not, they are still distracted and drive impared.

I would have to agree to an extent. Todays generation does not have repect, courtecy or consideration. We have more people who only care about themselves and to h### with the other people in this world. Go into a public restroom and we have toilets that flush automaticly because there are people that are to lazy to do it themselves. We have driving laws and speed limits on the books, but we can seem to follow simple rules. We have more vehicles on the road today, but less law enforcement. Even if the laws were enforced then you have some idiot screaming.."you're violating my rights". Two years fulltiming I have seen tailgating, unsafe lane changing, failure to stop behind the stop sign or stop line, speeding, cellphone use, and the list goes on.

I like the town of Binghamton New York. The citys budget was much to high so the mayor decided to fire the people who were not doing their job. Guess where he started. The Police department. He said if the police office was not going to do his or hers job and enforce the laws then you are not needed.

Drive on highway 190 through Nolandville Texas on a cell phone or speeding. Not only do you get stopped but you immediately get to go to the Judge and tell him why you feel that the laws do not apply to you. He hasn't bought one story yet. Today most people in that area know better.

Maybe this gives you some sort of idea why we have these laws. Again, I agree its sad that we have to try to protect our selves. And you're right, we don't need terrorists to distroy us, we will do that without their help.

Well, I don't think the new cell phone law in our state is scaring some people. While driving in I-5 south yesterday to Oregon, I saw 3 people talking on their cell phones without any hands-free devices. One lady in a VW with CA plates passed me in the 70 MPH zone; then an older man (I'm old too but he looks older than me) and another younger woman both with WA plates.

I think the $124.00 fine is not that big of a deal for these people-I hope the state legislature would increase this fine to maybe $250 for the first, then $500 for the second offense. Maybe this might make these few people take heed.

Those who think talking to a passenger is the same as talking on a cell phone or we've just gone too far with our laws should take in some information along with opinions. This recent series in the New York Times Driven to Distraction contains scientific studies and other data on the unusual mental demands of talking on a phone while driving.

We have laws against drunk driving because we've proven that this impairment causes accidents. The data is in about cell phones too. Unfortunately the cell phone industry has a lot of $ riding on the issue, and they ain't interested in your health.

Consider this....today we have the technology to place a divise in all motor vehicles to render a cell phone useless, unless the vehicle's ignition is in the off position. The government could pass a law requiring that the divise be placed in all vehicles in all states. Then if you are involved in an accident using a cell phone while driving, it is not a fine, but a prison term. However you would end up with some moron complaining, "you're violating my rights". But of course, it is my life and the life of others that is in the balance.

U gotta luv it...
Yesterday a lady passed me and was talking on her phone, leaning over and looking at some papers at the same time.I kinda slowed and sure enuff, she started over into my lane about 3 feet in front of me. Instead of honking,I put on the brakes and watched as she slid right into my lane and up onto the sidewalk and hit a no parking sign and just missed a hydrant. She looked around and started to leave, but a sheriffs deputy was right behind her by that time..I guess he was already behind her before it happened.

Good for the deputy and bad for her. I wish there was one deputy or WSP on Waaga Way this afternoon - was following a big black Suburban on the fast lane doing about 40 on a 55 MPH zone and stepping on the brakes occasionally. When I overtook him on the left lane, he was talking on his cell but slyly holding it in front of him. As what I've said in an earlier post in this thread, the fine should be raised so it will hurt if they don't heed.

Heh, my phones so old, blue tooth technology wasn't common yet. I've sufficed with the loud speaker mode and leaving it lie on top of my "beer shelf" that is my belly. I've gotten some really confused looks from some folks who wonder who the hell it is I'm talking to in the cab by myself, since the phone is invisible on my gut and there's no ear piece hanging from my ear.

With the increasing popularity of Bluetooth devices, more and more people appear psychotic as they jabber to themselves while walking down the street.

I refer to them as "The Borg." Particularly the ones with the LED flashing on their ears.
