Why is it so hard to find an open campground. Even trying to book a year in advance. Any tricks ?

You could pick less popular locations, seasons to visit. In many places, reservations get booked up but there is a high cancellation rate also, so keep trying. Many times I've gotten spots in Yellowstone and other places just a day or two before I set up camp.

Just be sure you read and understand cancellation policies before making them. Some places (not YNP) can ding you pretty hard for a canceled reservation, even though they can sell that spot to someone else.

When using Reserve America you need to reserve 6 months in advance using multiple devices, laptop, desktop, tablet even have other's do the same for you if you really want a site. Select your site(s) 10 or 15 minutes before the time In your area. A few seconds before opening time start clicking the reserve site button. If you are lucky enough to get your site you can log in to make payment and confirm your site. I know it seems unfair but you need to out smart the people using robot computers.
For most states Reserve America is the only way to reserve a site. Some counties use their own reservation system.

Blame the internet and cheap gas. Everybody and their mothers are buying RVs now, and reservations at popular spots are almost impossible to get.
People make reservations and then don't show up, you might be able to score a spot if you get there early.

We try to avoid holidays and the midst of high season in popular areas. Easier to get reservations, smaller if any crowds, and way less stress.

most state parks have online reservation sites and you can usually book 9 months in advance.

Send a message via ICQ to Fred and Bonnie
Rather than concentrating on state parks, check for close by commercial facilities.

We stay in the western half of the US where boondocking/drycamping spots are almost unlimited and often very beautiful. No reservations needed so you can travel on your own schedule. Today's connected world makes finding and sharing great free boondocking areas easy.

Just out of curiosity I went to the Hammonesset Beach SP website and tried to book a campsite for Aug 22, 2017. I was taken to the Reserve America website and there were about 7 full hookup sites and many more limited campsites available. I didn't go past that step because I have no plans to camp in Connecticut next week. Maybe the offerings were bogus, but they showed open sites.

Camping in the greater NYC area is always going to be limited, go West, young man, go West. Even just as far West of upstate NY, PA, etc.
