Road Conditions

What's up with the terrible road conditions of the highways and interstates in AZ and NM? I have read over the past year many complaints about potholes, rough bumpy roads, uneven pavement and etc. Why is this so? I plan to RV there in the near future but now have second thoughts. Any insights?

Its a combination of things, but overall I feel NM has far worse highways than AZ, probably due to having similar amount of land area, but only a fraction of the population as a tax base. 7 million in AZ vs 2 million in NM Note that thee are still New Mexico state highways that are gravel roads in places, see 126 near Cuba,NM or parts of NM 12 near Apache Creek

We returned about a month ago from CA to Sedona. I-40 eastbound between Kingman and Flagstaff, and also I-17 between Flagstaff and Sedona were the worst I have ever seen them. AZ had a terrible winter, colder and wetter than ever. Good for the drought, but terrible for the roads.

New Mexico is higher elevation, therefore their weather is worse. Yes NM roads are worse and repaired infrequently. Lived there.

Same as in IN and KY. We seem to bounce from lane to lane at times trying to find the non teeth jarring lanes, but never have much luck

Travelled west lately through, say Alabama. Indiana as well for bad roads.

I left PHX on Saturday EB on I 10. There were sections in Az. and NM that were rough, but to me, the good sections far outnumber the rough sections in both states. I was able to put my right side tire on the fog line and this helped smooth out the ride. This isn't an excuse for bad pavement though.

If you want rough, try I 10 in Louisiana.

What you refer to is only within the actual city limits of SF. It's still undecided.

Only a couple of main highways run through SF and there are plenty of ways to avoid those. I've seen a few 5ers on 101 and 19th st and it's tight. Mostly the major roads in CA get torn up during chain controls in areas like 80 and 50 in the Sierra and 101N and 5N of Mendocino towards Lassen.
