Angry RV Insurance

Just a heads up - For those that have RV Insurance with National General Insurance Company (NGIC), I would suggest you change. In my opinion, these folks are rip-off artists. Sad that they were recommended by Good Sams Club. I should have read their reviews, rather than trust GSC testimonials, very expensive personal lesson.

Could you explain a bit more? I gather you are unhappy with the service or payout on a collision or comprehensive claim?

RV & D, I hope you never have to send them a claim. I have an older RV that was in oversize lot storage (winter storage) on a military base. Got a call from caretakers (at night) that another patron called and said there was roof debris all around my RV. I immediately went there the next morning and took pictures. Roof stuff everywhere for 20 yards around my RV. Made claim in April and just got the "official" denial letter from NGIC yesterday. They claimed early (in May) "no wind event" despite Federal Agency showing 3 major storms through the area in the time frame of no damage to reported damage. The NWS showed these storms with wind events of 65 knots + within the county. Anywhoo ....I sent a 50+ page complaint to Alabama Insurance Commissioners' Office (to include NWS screen shots of weather reports), the Agent said "There're going to have to explain to me how this was not a 'wind event.' They did not even send the claim adjustment to me in May, sent it only to RV repair facility where I took it. Back and forth on email till they simply just stopped responding to emails. They say "not responsible for "fair wear and tear" (i.e. old RV/roof maintenance). Please don't just take my rant.....look these guys up on any insurance complaint forum and you will be shocked at what folks say about them !!! I was a dummy and just went with what GSC recommended at the time, didn't do sufficient research. There's a reason they are so cheap.

Hmm. I never considered National General to be cheap. I've obtained quotes a couple times and they have consistently been higher than a couple of my other choices (Allied, National Interstate, even Hartford).

I doubt if premium price has anything to do with it. The Claims Agent really doesn't care aboiut that, but they also don't necessarily do credible research and once they make up their mind about something, they rarely change it. They are the ones passing on info to the claims managers and your side of the story probably doesn't get shown fairly (if at all).

I've run into that on an RV accident claims where the total damages exceeded $50k. The agent nitpicked a couple items for a few hundred dollars, even though I had documented proof she was flat wrong. They can just ignore you and/or baffle with BS. They issued the check and closed the file as "paid" while I was still arguing. The shop completed repairs and my choice was to sign the check(accepting the payoff) or continue to live without my motorhome.

Hope your complaint to the insurance commish helps!

Jack...... National General- like Good Sam and Camping World- is a part of the Marcus Lemonis enterprise. The only solution is to not play.

D. Lindy says he didn't have any problems in 4 years. Can you expand on that? Did you have claims settled well, or just pay your premiums with no claims made?

Not really part of Lemonis' empire - GS merely markets an insurance program that is underwritten by National General Insurance (formerly GMAC).

National General Insurance is owned by National General Holdings Corp and that is owned by the Barry Karfunkel family.

It's time to get a lawyer involved. Most lawyers will write a letter to the insurance company explaining your position for a couple hundred dollars. In my state, if an insurance company does not pay a claim, they are subject to triple damages. A well crafted letter accusing the insurance company of "acting in bad faith" will get it kicked up the chain to someone who will want to make this go away. Hopefully, you can get a fair settlement. Filing a complaint with the state Insurance Commissioners office also puts pressure on them but not as much as threatened legal action. Legal defense is very expensive and unless you are talking about $100,000+ in bodily injury, it's cheaper to pay off the claim.

Insurance Commissioners office said they are holding firm. I'm afraid the legal costs will be more than repair and a '98 model is not worth a lot despite the super low mileage. Probably the end of our RV and our RV'ing.

I hope other members with claims experience will post here soon. I just got a quote from NG through Good Sams, and the premium is $180 less than my current insurance, which is Nationwide. I have no complaints at all about my Nationwide coverage but the premium just went up 25%, so I was looking at different options.

Get a quote from Hartford AARP. I had GMAC (now National General) for 7 years with no rate increases. After a windshield claim they raised my rates 30% so I got a quote from Hartford AARP, they were 1/2 of what National General wanted. I ended up switching all my insurance to them and saved 25% overall.

Changed over to NG early this year--first time with them, and somewhat cheaper than other quotes. My auto insurer doesn't cover large RVs, so had to find something.
Start of my AK trip this June, turned too sharply and pivoted L rear corner of Suites into a gas pump guard pipe--big bash in fiberglass cap and some other damage. NG sent me a check based on my pics of damage and their estimate of repairs, less my deductible, before I was even home to get an estimate.
Haven't had a chance to get it done, so will see what happens when the fiberglass shop takes over the fixing, if there is any hangup on extra costs.
