RV Seatbelts

Which passengers (including the driver) in an RV are required to wear seat belts & is this a state or federal issue?

It is state by state. Most states now state that ALL passengers in a moving motorized vehicle must be seat belted.

That's a very good question, one my wife and I would like a firm answer to.

Our motor home was built in 1995. The only seats that have seat belts are the two captains chairs. I guess people in 1995 were a lot harder to kill than people today.

So, what's the deal? Do our other seats need seat belts or don't they? And, where do we find these seat belts? And what's the standard for seat belt installation?

Our captain's chairs are simply bolted to the plywood floor, and the seat belts are bolted to the captain's chairs. Doesn't sound very invincible to me. Is it OK for other seat belts to simply be bolted to the plywood floor?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Jim

Actually more states do not require rear adult passengers be belted in than do have that requirement.
Like most things in life being aware of present conditions and acting accordingly makes movement in an MH for passengers very doable and safe.

Ours is a '96 Discovery that came with captain's chair belts, three on the couch & one on the lounge chair. I added belts to the two swivel chairs around the table. I bolted them through the floor in one of the lower compartments. Google them to locate some. Pay attention to their length.

RV Seatbelts

I guess people riding around without seat belts are no more prone to getting picked up than I am riding around with my loaded 357.

Have you noticed any seat belts in a Greyhound bus? Or a school bus? Most of the state and federal passenger seat belt laws do not apply or are different for large or "multi-purpose" vehicles.

Federal laws generally specify which seat positions must be equipped with seat belts and primarily apply to passenger vehicles and light trucks only. The states decide when and how to enforce the use of seat belts, but again they typically exempt larger/heavier multi-purpose vehicles from "passenger" laws.

You won't go far wrong if you assume any passengers in the front "cab" area must be belted in, and any passengers behind that area do not. That means they can stand up, walk around, and even have a cocktail in hand.

I'm sure any number of people will scream about the [lack of] wisdom of doing so, but I'll leave that up to your individual good sense.
