This was reported tonight on ABC world news. They ran film of the motor home with bullet holes all over it. The man and his woman companion were camped near the beach in Baja, surfing. A new travel advisory was issued by our state department, and Mexican government officials because of elevated violence towards non-Mexicans.

This is why my wife and I both have pistols, and also a 12-bore. Nothing deters a thug like the unmistakeable sound of cocking a pump shotgun. Well, except maybe a load of 00 buckshot from said shotgun.

Been going on for some time.... Frankly, I'm still of the opinion that we should shutdown all legal travel into Mexico (tourist-wise) with the statute that it will remain as such until they get their **** in order.

Since no crimes EVER happen to RVers in the US YOU should stay there cowering behind your imagined security systems. That incident happened several months ago and has been reported over and over by the Mexico haters as news. The weather here in La Penita has been great, no one we know has been raped or robbed here, and our Canadian friends tell us they feel safer in Mexico than while traveling through the US. STAY HOME if you don't want to travel here.

Little difference here, Stan, in America you have the option of arming yourself to provide your own protection, not so in Mexico.

In El Mexico they know you can't arm yourself while yer down there, so you're an easy target. Plus law enforcement is almost entirely corrupt and/or non-existant. Who hasn't read about the need to bribe Mexican law officials.

At current, its a slumbagm garbage can country that really needs a violent, bloody revolution to get itself in order and sadly, is unlikely it will improve until that happens.

And you're right, we do have the choice of not traveling there. We also have the choice and to some extent, duty, of warning the ignorant of the chances they take visiting there.\

Myself, I have no plans to ever cross that southern border into hostile territory.

I thought the couple were on this side of the boarder? I did not see it all last night. I will not go into Mexico for the very reasons above.

A little more info on the incident, that happened about a year ago. They were camped alone, on a deserted beach. Yes, Joseph, I know, I have been glad to have my gun twice while boondocking in the US, once in the Warner Mtns of CA, and once in Paymaster Canyon in Nevada, thats why I won't boondock alone in the US anymore either, too much hassel. And no, I wouldn't bring my weapons across the border into Mexico, the prospect of their jails turns me off. BTW, the only time I was stopped by a cop, was in Mazatlan when I turned left against a red arrow, (didn't see it until too late), and it cost me 100 pesos, agout $10 US. Pretty cheap fine I think. That said, none of the experienced Mexico travelers that I know will linger anywhere within 50 miles of the border.

I posted this on another forum some time back -

This is just a note of warning to anyone contemplating travel into Mexico, our fine neighbor to the south.

A young man friend of my Daughter's has gotten into trouble in Mexico. He was going down to Rocky Point for a weekend of relaxation and was stopped at the border.

Very stupidly, he had in his possession, a small amount of marijauna (3-4 cigarettes worth). He has been in jail since September and yesterday was sentenced to 10-TEN years in a Mexican Prison.

Now, I am a retired criminal defense attorney and fully agree and admit he was both guilty of a crime and stupid. I am aware of the old, "you do the crime, you do the time!" This is nonsense.

BUT, his cell mate was caught with a loaded AK47 and ammunition. He got 4 years.

This young man tells us that he can buy, from his cell, ANY drug he wants, MJ, cocaine, crack, heroine, meth, whatever including the services of a prostitute, male or female. All at 'reasonable' prices. Place your order in the morning and get afternoon service.

We are appealing, of course.

My point is that we should, as a people, avoid going to Mexico or in any way assisting their corrupt government.

Addendum -

Another in their party had 3-.38 cal. bullets in his RV. He was the fuse for the whole situation. Everyone in the party including 2 kids under 5 years of age were searched (and not kindly).

The guy with the bullets was in jail for 4 days, had to fight to get his RV back and fined a bunch of $$.

We have since learned the Judge was misinformed as to the charges. We have been told that on appeal (you MUST follow their procedures) the 3-Judge panel will overturn the sentence. We HOPE. That will happen in late January or early Feb.

" our Canadian friends tell us they feel safer in Mexico than while traveling through the US."

There is a huge difference between "feeling" safe and "being" safe. I used to love to go to Rocky Point and thereabouts for fishing. I Believe myself to be safe once past the border. But it is that 10 miles zone that worries me.

Breaking the law there, any law, no matter how innocently, is VERY problematic.

hamguy, do you think the pressure from the US government to stem the drug trade has anything to do with the sentence for drug offenses in Mexico?
