Safe Travel

Due to news stories of robberies, assaults, etc., I am considering carrying a firearm when I travel. Any suggestions, considerations, etc are helpful.

You had better first check with the NRA or CCA regarding the various states licensing requirements and storage rules. You can get in real trouble real fast if you don't know the rules. And lawyers are expensive.
Pepper or bear spray is a good alternative.

I've carried one while traveling for the last 12 years. I'm not familiar with Tenessee laws for concealed carry, but I'd start there. Many states have reciprocity laws that allow for lawful carry in other states, while others don't. There are a few states where reciprocity is accepted in that state only if it is your home state. There are two states that you can apply for a consealed carry license even if you don't live there. Utah and Florida have no residency requirements but you can be licensed in those states which allows you to benefit from their reciprocity agreements with other states. Take the time to investigate the laws of each state. If available, enroll in safety classes and familiarize yourself with laws regarding transporting firearms through states you are not licensed for. Above all if you choose to carry, know full well that you are responsible for every round fired, no matter where it stops.

Haven't heard of anything happening in campgrounds or on public lands boondocking.

Just stay away from cities!

Do you currently own a firearm?

Do you shoot regularly with it?

Firearms carried by 'novices' can turn ugly real fast.
Unless proficient in the use of a firearm and willing to use it........DO NOT carry. Period

Firearms are to be used...not brandished
And if used one had best be prepared for the consequences
Never pull a firearm unless you are going to use it!

Traveling with a firearm...........don't ask/don't tell/don't brandish

Your best defense is your mind, it's called situational awareness. If you don't have a comfortable feeling about a place, move on!
As to carrying a firearm, again it's your mind in control. If you are not sure you can live with being responsible for taking a life, do not buy or carry a weapon.

The carefree days of Harriet and Ozzie raising their family in complete safety are history. Being alert and aware of your surroundings is your best defense.
I highly recommend obtaining and reading the book "In the Gravest Extreme" before you make the decision to purchase a firearm.

Federal law says you can carry your gun unloaded in a locked container. The Safe Passage Act [ again Federal law ] says you can carry in this condition directly through any state from one location that you can legally have a gun to another location that you can legally have that gun. The hitch in this is some states don't follow the law. Mostly in the Northeast and along the West Coast.

Put simply, if you’re traveling through a gun-hostile state without stopping, and you’re legally allowed to possess your firearm in your home state and in your destination state, and you pack your unloaded firearm and ammunition in a locked hard-sided gun container in your trunk, you’ll have the Federal Safe Passage Act as a defense available to you.

What does locking it up unloaded do for you, especially in a trunk?

If you meet Old-Biscuit's list, the below link is a one-stop site for all your needs. This should be the sticky.

As far as carrying unloaded and locked, carrying a boat anchor is just about as useful. Those government bureaucrats.

It keeps you from a long prison sentence, loss of fire arm, loss of vehicle. The district attorney in DC doesn't care about your perceived rights or what political ideals you hold unless you are a Senator.

I respectfully submit that the "news" you are receiving is hand-picked to create this reaction, to build fear, judgment, and anxiety.

Door Dash drivers, kids going to a wrong address... we've become a nation of folks paranoid of anything and everyone and it all comes from social media and the sources cited by our "friends" and the algorithm.
